That's correct - and the idiots STILL persist in using the hand helds.
We've had one for maybe 8-10 years. The only time that it's used is if our landline is out (like today) or when we are traveling, i.e., emergency use. In those years, probably no more then 25 hours total use. We never do texting, never check the internet on that itty bitty screen (I'm also too cheap). The plan that we have now is a "seniors" plan, 200 minutes/month and nationwide for about $30 + tax plus the phone has a camera (whoopee).
Back to Uncle Bob's comment - you forgot one extremely important word in today's world, ENTITLEMENT. I'm not going political, but there are certain factions in the US fabric of today that feel that they are due, and if someone else has to pay for it, tough, not my problemDave W

We have that issue with entitlement around here as well. Take that lady who shot her kids and herself because she didn't give enough info to get foodstamps but her daughter was posting about it on facebook or something like that. If you don't have money for food, then you don't need a cell phone, especially one that is on the internet.

Theres a cool thing.. since about 2008 most new cars have been offered with bluetooth connect. push 1 button to answer, and the same button to hang up and it's broadcast thru speakers, voice dial too. they will automatically connect with whatever phone is in the car programmed to use it, but they can be programmed for more than 1 phony dad got 1 in his '08 Elantra, and it was a fairly inexpensive option. the unit sits where the eyeglass compt would be in the roof.. some aftermkt stereos are getting that technology too..
My '95 K1500 came out when cell phones were bulky and texting wasn't thought of.. So I just don't answerYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

The problem is, everyone has one of the d*** things these days and think nothing of using them anywhere they are. One day I saw a homeless guy pushing a shopping cart with all his worldly possessions in it, and he was on his cell phone !
People have no fear of the cops any more. I've told the story before that when I worked for the body shop we held the contract to repair all of the city vehicles that were damaged. Part of my job was to drive them back to the city garage when they were done. One day I was taking back a black and white police cruiser with lights on top and the whole 9 yards and some teenage girl was tailgating me and talking on her cell phone the whole time! She had no idea I wasn't a cop in there but she really didn't care, had to be 5 feet off of my rear bumper and gabbing away.
So I really think any laws won't do any good unless they attach some school requirements to it, then people might be inconvenienced enough to not want the hassle of getting caught.

I'm notoriously bad for not carrying my cell phone or carrying it and not having it on. That seems to be the family joke, Don't try to call Dad's cell phone, he won't answer anyway. I have Bluetooth in the truck for the few times I remember the phone. Pretty handy I must say, but if they ban cell phone use of any kind it won't be much of a loss for me.

I look at it this way,
Yes, the 19 year old driver was texting and driving, which is wrong no matter which way you look at it.
That said the school bus would have hit the big truck if the 19 year old had not. Look at how far that bus rammed up on the back of the big truck. Now that could have happened when the second bus hit the first bus. Either way, those buses were going to hit the big truck. That could be driver error for following too close or it could be because the brakes on BOTH buses were crap (as stated in the report). If the buses had not rearended the 19 year old's pickup, would there have been any deaths? We will never know.
Note that the bus that went to the hospital (sp) to pick up the students wrecked in the parking lot because of bad or mis-adjusted brakes.
The 19 year old is going to get all of the blame. Should he???

it sounds like a series of factors contributed to needless deaths and injuries
the kid was tired
he was screwing around with that stupid phone
bad brakes on buses may not have been a factor.
i think they should treat accidents caused by screwing around with electronic devices
just like drunk driving
lose the driver license
go to jail
$10,000 in court costs and fines
etc.
it needs to be a real hard core punishment to slap folks into obeying the law.a hot rod is whatever i decide it is.

Fines and courtThat dosen't stop drunk drivers probably wouldn't stop phone use either
They ride around talking and figuring it won't happen to them. I'd like to tell you what I'd like to do to the phone heads, but you'd think I'm radical

here in Kansas, the drunk driving laws don't matter. I have heard of people still caught when they don't even have a license. Is anybody else at fault? Yes. I used to drive a school bus in Texas and there should be no reason for 2 buses to be involved in that wreck. If they say it was faulty brakes, it is the bus drivers responsibility to check them before the bus leaves the yard. If they are not working properly, then the bus stays put. That is not to say that some type of problem developed on the trip, but find it hard to believe that it happened to the two buses that were in the wreck. I think some drivers were not going through their pre-trip check list.

You have to get the police to quit using them before you ask anyone else to stop.
I don't like even having a cell phone. I have a cheapazzed Boostmobile. It is hardly ever on. I use it ONLY when I need it and never when I am driving. If I had not had a stroke I would not have a cell phone now. My children actually want me to have it "just in case".Bug
