Yep, I agree with Dave 100%! It's a great car, lots of potential and it will be a fantastic driver while you continue to "make it yours". Enough talk about your engine of choice - looking forward to seeing lots of pictures as you move forward, and glad to have you back posting again after a period of down time.Roger

Thanks Dave, Jim and Roger! I will be posting more pictures very soon! I am in the process of having someone make a serial number tag for me with the correct number that's on the title on it to put back onto the body/firewall. The original one was pulled off to paint the firewall and was in bad shape, etc so I'm having a new one made so it passes inspection by the NC inspector. Tags Backeast, Trim Tags Backeast, Data Plates, A.G.Backeast. We make tags for AMC, Buick, Cadillac, Camaro, Chevelle, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Corvette, Dodge, DeSoto, Edsel, Ford, Frazer, La Salle, Henry J, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury, Mustang, Oldsmobile is the guy doing it for me and supposedly is the "go to" guy.
Once this is done I will hopefully have the engine finished and pull the transmission from the 87 Monte Carlo SS for the 200-4R that's in it. These are my plans for the next 2 weeks. Engine is tore down, stripped and ready to be painted and a cam thrown in. I am running finned valve covers and a finned air cleaner. The engine will be painted Ford red (hint hint). I figured the red will match the wheels and is different than plain black or chevy orange. I like black but I've always had black and with the fins painted red, it stands out nicely in my opinion.www.streamlineautocare.com

Shawn, you did good. As far as engine choice, run what you have. If you own the car for a long period of time (and I suspect you will) there is nothing to prevent you from playing with different drive trains down the road....it happens with a lot of cars.

Have you talked to your DMV about this? The reason I ask is because I'm basically in the same situation with my 37 Dodge.....long story but basically, it had a missing VIN tag when I bought it and had to go thru the inspection process to get a good title on it (using the stamped VIN on the frame).
The truck is legal as is at this point, but I’ve found and stamped a correct firewall VIN tag for the truck and want to install that also. I have talked to the DMV about this and they don’t have a problem with it except it HAS TO BE INSTALLED BYTHEM (after they do a check on the title and frame VIN).
Where you have the original VIN tag there probably won’t be a problem either, but doing the title paperwork and VIN tags is one of those areas you want to make sure is done by the book for whatever state you’re in.
Again, great car.Last edited by Mike P; 12-31-2011 at 07:22 AM.
I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

FMX - how much did they charge to make the new plate(it looks pretty cool on their web site, but they don't mention prices)? If you don't mind my asking!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Thanks again guys. Sorry for no responses guys, I got sick yet again with strep throat and been in bed. Anyways as for the VIN (for 49 there was no VIN it's actually just a serial product data plate) I got it done and hope it will be fine. I do not see why. There is no number on the front of the frame since it has the MII stub up front. The other numbers are under the body and not legible but I know the car is not stolen or anything.
Stovens, the price on the tags varies but I got mine done for $80 and that included the guy shipping it back Express mail to get it to me quicker... Also that was me providing my own tag from Dennis Carpenter.
I think without tag and Express Shipping it's $90. It may seem a lot of money to stamp some numbers but you know it will be done correctly and the guy knows his stuff that's for sure. He knows what size letters and style to use depending on the year, the kind of star to use depending on the year (army 5 point or asterics), and so forth.
Hopefully if I feel better my Tuesday I will have some more progress done on this thing. I'm hoping to get a transmission cover for the floor, get the gas tank stripped and painted, engine block painted and transmission cleaned and painted. Pictures soon to come by the end of the week!www.streamlineautocare.com

FMX,
Mike's point, and I agree with him 100%, is that it is worth your time to visit with your local DMV before you put this new tag in place. Here in Kansas any vehicle ID tag has to be installed by the Highway Patrol at their Vehicle Inspection Station, and doing it yourself can bring a pottential charge of vehicle fraud. It does not take much to review the process with them and get their guidance, and it may just save you a world of hassles later. Your statement, "....I know the car is not stolen or anything" would not get you anything but a harsh stare from the inspectors in my area. They can make registering an old car, especially one that has been "modified", pure h#ll to the point of having to go to court to get a court order directing the DMV to honor an old, out of state title. A respectful visit to the DMV might actually grease the skids for you.Roger

Well guys I know I have not had any updates here in a while. I've been very busy with my new shop and business and no time to come online. I have been working steadily on the car and finally got the engine done!!! I will post some pictures in a little bit or tomorrow but either way I am very proud and happy with the engine! I ended up stripping the engine compartment and painting it semi gloss black. It's cleaner in my opinion and more simple to keep clean. I got rid of the piano hinge hood setup and went with original and very nice 49 hinges. This turned into a HUGE project that took almost a week to fix and ended up having to change the 51 hood brace in the rear and find a decent enough 49 brace to weld in it's place. We also braced it up some because these hoods in their stock form are flimsy and have lots of play. It took having to repaint the whole front end and some shaping work to the hood to match the cowl a bit better and fix the fender to hood gaps which before were huge and WAY off.
On the engine I went with a flat tappet Isky cam. I can't remember the specs off the top of my head right now but will post them later but it's based off a circle track type cam with lower lift and 107 centerline for a nice sounding idle.
Transmission is out of a 87 Monte Carlo SS and is the 200-4R. I know most people hate these trans but some love them for their gear ratio, size and weight and from my research, the best ones to get are from an 86-87 Monte SS or a Grand National so I lucked out on this one. It's got almost 80,000 miles on it but for now I will throw in new main seals, filter and new fluid and let it go because it shifts great still.
The car should be done now in another week and then will be coming back to my shop for exhaust, Genie shifter, power window kit and a few other things. I also decided to go with a stock 50 Ford bench seat and later will look for 64 or 67 Thunderbird (Thunder chicken) buckets to match the 67 wrap around rear seat.www.streamlineautocare.com
