Have you noticed Google's HomePage today?? A big black "Censor" block over the name, and a note related to the pending votes on censoring the web. Wikipedia is blacked out today, too, also in protest of the potential actions which are being pushed primarily by the entertainment industry/lobbiests trying to force others to block illegal copys of movies & songs via the internet from other countries, as I understand.Roger

" Please, not everyone receiving assistance from social programs is not just some lazy low life stealing your money......" please do not put words in my mouth, pulled the judgment trigger there.
We have in this country something like 40% non tax payers what is that all about? I am not saying some folks do not need help. I worked at a food bank while I was laid off and seeking another job, I am very aware of people in need. I also saw a guy coming in that made 4grand a month and because the church only ask that one presents an electric bill saying they live in the county they are entitled to food, 100 pounds. That little church gives out 300 pounds a day 3 times a week.
My point is that generally speaking we need to teach people how to fish, we give them fish way to easily. I am pretty sure you are smart enough to follow what I am driving at.Is that your face or did your pants fall down?

Pipa? Oh that's Prince Williams sister-in-law Just another example of politicians with too much time on their hands thinking up dumb ways to screw folks.Rick Perry isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree but His idea of part time politicians and part time wages for them actually makes sense.

"Teach them to fish"
Sure would be nice if it were just that easy, Stroker... Unfortunately so many social programs have gone through so many years of mismanagement, fraud, waste, and abuse that in many instances it's easier to take the free lunch then to get on to a better life... I can't think of any one stroke of a magic wand that would solve the debacle, but then I can't really just sit back and blame the people participating either.
When you add in all the absurdities in the system, all the money and med care going to people who aren't even citizens of this country, then all the duplicity from one program to another, it would be hard to say where to even start let alone have one simple solution!!!! Handouts aren't the answer, one quick look at the system now is proof of that. At the same time, just shutting off all the money would cause a huge calamity for the recipients especially now when it's so difficult for even highly qualified and motivated people to find a decent job!!!!! For some reason we've made it more attractive to sit back and collect the freebies than it is to get a good education, work hard, and get ahead in life.... Why's that??
Heck, way back in the mid 70's when I first got done with all the rehab and other programs thru the VA and got so I could walk again and generally be a somewhat productive member of society I had more "here, take this it's free" offers then I ever had offers to go to work!!!! I gave up on all the social systems, stuck with the VA for my medical care, and learned to fight and scrape my way to any sort of even mediocre success all on my own. It's like I kept telling people I don't want your charity, I just want to be able to be productive, most just looked at me like I was weird or something!!!! Looking back it probably would have been far easier to just take the handouts rather then strike out on my own... I was fortunate enough to have my Dad, family members, and a bunch of friends who kept telling me what I could do if I worked at it, not what I couldn't do because of my limitations. Not many have that motivation and incentive offered to them and instead become a part of the "social system" that is (in part) bankrupting this country. I don't know, I sure don't have the answers, heck I'm not even sure what all the questions are anymore but I do know the problem does not lie solely on the backs of those who take the handouts but also on those who made it so easier to take the handouts instead of working through the adversity and getting a real job and doing something worthwhile to advance yourself...Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Charlie, you and I usually see things from a very similar perspective, so a word of caution here.
There has been an effort for the past few decades to demonize the notion of lobbying. It's not a conspiracy, it's a ploy. If anyone signs the above referenced petition, that's lobbying. If anyone sends a letter or email to their Congress person, that's lobbying. If you join a group, say to preserve Social Security, and you pay a visit to your Congress person to advance your point of view, that's lobbying. This is all protected specifically in the First Amendment. It's a right granted to ensure that those who reside in this country have a way to seek redress, or protect themselves from overbearing laws/regulation. It could also be seen as a pesky nuisance by certain politicians who seek greater power and control.
If enough citizens end up being convinced that "lobbying" is the problem, we'll see laws limiting our ability to protest and protect in a civil manner, thus enriching the power of the political class. It will be in a small way at first, then ever more restrictive, each time presented as a "necessary action to limit corruption...." or some such deceitful cloak.
The problem isn't the act of lobbying, it's the act of the political person accepting some form of quid pro quo, e.g. a bribe, political contribution, a future "job", whatever. The person offering the bribe to someone they believe would accept it isn't a saint, but nothing "bad" happens until the politician accepts and acts on the bribe. THAT is where we need to focus our ire and action...............................not on limiting our rights.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.
Luck occurs when preparation and opportunity converge.

It's been a long time since I've had to actually lock a thread down. Please let's not force me to do so now.
Just agree to disagree and move on.

So Gary, who appointed you the Sergeant At Arms of the forum? Threads take off on tangents all the time, and one of the good things about this group is that we can offer differing viewpoints, on or off topic, without offending one another. Do you really believe that your use of all caps and making demands in the public forum is the right approach? That type of message is much more appropriate for a PM to the person(s) you believe to be offending to you, or to the Moderator. You started this by posting a question that could have been answered by one click of your mouse on the CraigsList page you posted, and it opened up a political discussion. What did you expect?
I hope that this is not offensive to anyone else, but it's my opinion - my $0.02 for what it's worth. Off the soap box now. (Sorry Bill, I we were typing at the same time, but you finished first.)Last edited by rspears; 01-19-2012 at 08:27 AM. Reason: Timing
