Clearly you were (are) not alone, as the owner of a customer driven business with just 4 employees these days and myself, it's the very same. Unless we do a quality job for our customers, they will never come back, nor will they use the positive word of mouth that drives 40% of my business to my shop. Whenever I have someone walk in asking if I'm a union shop, I ask them "why, does it matter?" If they respond yes, then I explain the size of my shop, all of a sudden, they no longer see it as "big business", just a "local owner trying to keep his head above water". If they leave because I am not a union shop, it's their loss as non of my competitors (within a 40+ mile radius) are union controlled shops either. Some come back after driving around for hours with a preconceive "chip on their shoulder", others never do, most likely embarrassed to do so........Now, granted, while I am not a union business (nor is my industry likely to unionize any time soon), I am not anti union either, having family and friends who are long time members of their respective unions. Where I do get angry is when I hear someone in a union complaining that they are going to have to pay $10 a week instead of $5.00 a week for their healthcare benefits......Why do I get angry, simple, because I pay (and this is just for basic Blue Cross/Blue Shield for my family) over $1,200 a month for mine.......Same goes for those in the union complaining because they are "only" getting 6 weeks of vacation a year.........Heck, I'd like to be able to take more than 2 days off in a row (I am open 6 days a week)........Sometimes a union is a good thing, other times it is not, you have to really see it from the other side of the equation to fully understand each sides viewpoint.

Well Gary, I have to agree with Bob on this one. You first demanded that Bill close this thread because you were unhappy that what you started developed a life of it's own and digressed to other subjects. When that was rebuffed you're now resorting to a personal attack, which along with links to extremist web sites Bill advised would not be tolerated (both smart moves, Bill). You say that the only opinions being expressed are mine, Bob's, and Dave's, and that anything that Dave posts is followed/supported blindly, but if you take time to actually read the posts you will note that both Bob & I have brought to question some of the details in Dave's positions - sure, we generally agree with the direction he's headed, but we've introduced some healthy discussion about details. Alllen has been a voice of the counterpoint, and as Bob mentioned this is not the first time for some banter amongst the group. It's current, important, and with total respect for the varying opinions that have been stated. As a point in fact, the only person who has said anything about not being respected is you, and for the life of me I cannot see where there has been anything disrespectful directed toward you at any point in the process. You have the opinion that you "own" the thread, and thus can decide when things others choose to post are not "on-topic" and rein them in, and that if your wishes are not followed it is a lack of respect. For me that does not follow any definition of respect that I ever learned, but that's a moot point. As Bob said, "....any further commentary on this aspect will stop for me here.", and please do not take my ignorring your further words as any sign of disrespect.Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

Digression is the key word to focus on rules or not.We all have been on forums long enough that rules are second nature. If you have a member such as myself who justifiably feels he is being mistreated and ignored then you stop.It is just common sense.Last edited by 1gary; 01-25-2012 at 03:01 PM.
