Well I'm back on the road after winter storage and a finicky State Inspection which required new exhaust gaskets and a replaced tie rod. I am looking forward to some summer touring but I took on a summer teaching job so it looks like only the weekends will be open.

Nice to hear you're back on the road! Does the insurance not allow you to drive it to school, or? I ran into that with Grundy. You can't even drop your kids off at school with a vehicle they insure......Ryan

HELLO Don! It's nice to see and hear you're back with us and the rod is up and running.
I'm curious as well, if your insurance or registration limits the use of the rod?

Sure you can, drop off the kids.
Just don't tell..

Have an accident on the way and a kid is injured and they'll say you violated the terms of the policy. So you'll find yourself liable for all the costs.
No thanks.

Hello 40, I recall your VERY interesting buildup of the Cummins-Corvette. To your interesting question I am insured by American National Insurance Co. (ANPAC) and the local agent lives within easy driving distance. At local drive-in meets I often get the comment that I have regular plates and State Inspection sticker because I want to be able to drive the car wherever and whenever, BUT I have noticed that parking in a regular space brings on a mini-car-show so I don't deliberately seek the most visible parking space. This has happened at least twice when I went to a supermarket and again last Thanksgiving when I took my grandson to Bass Pro and parked in a large lot of the holiday crowd. I hope I never need the Insurance but so far National has not hasseled me. I live in a semi-rural small town and there are a number of street rods with exposed motors and custom bodies which show up mainly at the local Friday night drive in but they are often visible around town and apparently well known to the local police.
Best Wishes,

I've looked into vintage car insurance in the past (maybe it was Haggerty) and it's not for me. Sure they'll insure for the full value of your vehicle, but the car must be stored enclosed and never driven..

It may be more complicated or more simple in my case since my car is a Bebops 29-replica that was titled in Virginia in 2012 so a classic car designation does not apply. I went through a LOT of hoops to get the VIN plate on the firewall including submission of receipts for every part on the car not bought in Virginia and $670 taxes on all those parts (mostly from Speedway as well as Bebops).
Best Wishes,

Recent Update: In an effort to stretch mpg I set the idle down to a rough rumble although my cam is not wild. As a result I have lost the use of my speedometer. Then I set the idle back to 900 rpm and it runs smoother there but my speedometer is still gone. I will have to trace the wiring and the plastic gear in the transmission that runs the pulse unit in any event but I wonder if there is anyone out there who has experienced speedometer damage due to vibration?
P.S. just looking back at the early pictures of my roadster and noting the grassy gravel driveway causes me to mention our new 400 foot blacktop driveway installed two months ago. It was not cheap but it is already cluttered with leaves and small branches from the trees. It looks like I need to use the leaf blower frequently and get a picture of the roadster on the new surface.

Thanks for the update Don. I can't see why changing the idle would cause the unit to stop working. Unless the additional movement / vibration caused damage to a wire / chafing? So I think you were on the right path, look over the wires.
Oh, and yes you owe us pictures now too! LOL..

Reply to Jerry:
I am glad to hear from you. I have been trying to find an old message from you as to the last year SBC-LS that is compatible with my running gear with the 1976 Corvette SBC. Was it a 1988 or later? Anyway on another note my wife let her drivers license lapse and no longer drives herself so we take weekly exploring trips in a 50 mile radius. Since I grew up in southeastern Penna. there is a LOT I don't know about the back roads of Virginia. As with your trip on old Rt. 66 I have been amazed at the amount of corn crops in Virginia. Once you go off to the side of Route 1 either east or west the blacktop roads are often only 1 1/2 lanes wide and houses are few and far between so almost every Saturday we take an exploring tour. I have also come to appreciate the multiple Civil War battle sites in Virginia. Now I need to get my speedometer repaired but my wife will only tour in our 2008 Impala "land cruiser" with the AC! I always wanted a "California style" open roadster but looking over my shoulder it might have been better to build one of those replica three window 32 coupes so I could have AC for the wife. Live and Learn!
