For Audiophiles out there
Recently my shop speakers bit the dust. The foam surrounds on the woofers are shot. I picked up a new used pair at Goodwill, but before tossing the old ones out, I thought I'd look the up. Turns out there are a ton of web sites stating what great sound Epicure had in the 70's and repair kits are out there to refoam the speakers. It's cheap and they sound like new when done.
So I looked for a similar pair, and found these old Model 2's for a hundred bucks because they had shot woofers too. 50 bucks later two repair kits are on their way here to fix four 8" woofers. The model 2's went for 900.00 bucks new in 1988, and are real beauties. Here are a few web shots of whart I'm talking about.
Figured repair is always better than dumping!
and here is the speakers I picked up for a hundred bucks(not mine but identical) I will post before and after shots as I recieve my parts kits. love the real wood laminate as opposed to fake wook vinyl!

Just an FYI
That's a very common problem, this is a kit that you can buy, Parts Express 25 bucks for a set of two. Includes speaker center cone, glue, and applicators Used this product several times since I moved to Ga. I think the dry heat from the furnace kills that foam never had the problem when I lived in Miami.

cerwin vega.s all ways thought that was a cool name been many years ago when my dads buddys would come over and drive all my mom s glass ware off the shelfs of the house .we had a set of Ess amt towers and a phase linear 400 amp and two at times . there was a life time guaranty on the voice coils ribbon tweeters . we did a time or two run the amp wide open to kiss rock city would rip the drivers foam up and sparks would come out of the ribbons tweeters. we did not allways do this the coils would get spots in then were they would start to fail .so we would put them out of there misery. in time the ribbon voice coils came with a fine mesh that stop the welding of the ribbons .but no hope for the drivers foam they would fail many times voice coil was trash ...mom still has a horn 4 by 7 foot and was over 8 feet deep built in to the house had a 15to 18 inch Crown speaker in it getting power by a tube amp . i pay any thing to have just one of them days back all of them have past awayLast edited by pat mccarthy; 12-25-2012 at 12:07 PM.

Here are some shots of the refoaming process:
First removed each speaker, and picked off all foam remaining.
Then glueing in new foam surrounds
After unclamping the clothes pins
Completed system with Marantz Receiver2230 picked up on Craigslist for cheap with old Kenwood turntable also from Craigslist all hooked up to the newly refoamed speakers, all less than 300.00 bucks, which sounds beautiful. Enjoying all the old vinyl again, and getting radio reception better than any radio new or old in house!
