charlie got his orders
Charlie just got his orders. instead of picking a home port he told his command he wanted the newest boat in the fleet. He got USS 785 John Warner. Stationed Norfolk, VA. less than an hour away. He reports the first of april. I am so happy that he will be close to home. He was thinking Guam and did not want to go there as there are alot of spiders.Last edited by jyardgirl; 02-19-2013 at 01:41 PM.

Barb,
I had no idea that the ships company would assemble at this point, while the ship is under construction. According to the article I read First Sailors Report to PCU John Warner, the keel will be laid around March 16, 2013 so Charley will be around Norfolk for a while which is great! Know you're overjoyed with his initial assignment!Roger

i asked him the same thing roger. he said that he will do his quals on another sub probably the uss newport news. then they wait at norfolk keeping fit and running drills until warner is ready. the warner has a great face book page that has pics of the crew so far. they have laid the keel and plan on comissioning it by the end of this year ahead of schedule.BARB

Barb,
Sounds like he's off to a great start, and yes, knowing which end of a wrench is which is a plus! I finagled E3 out of boot when I enlisted, then out of A School requested a waiver on time in grade to take the E4 test and got the first group! Got me E4 under 1, which was pretty unusual at the time. Charlie may well get E4 out of school, but if not he'll be positioned well to blow the top out of that test! Congrats to Charlie, and to Mom & Dad, too.Roger

Congratulations, Charlie! Congratulations to Charlie's Mom as well.
A sailor who is first in his/her class in A school gets first pick from the list of duty assignments. That honor is well deserved.
At least that's the way it was when I graduated from Engineman A school at Great Lakes. I'll have to admit that I wasn't exactly at the top of my class. I'll also have to admit that this took place a mere 62 years ago so things may have changed just a little(?) since then.
We had a plenty of choices ranging from "battlewagons" and carriers down to tugboats, wood hulled minesweepers ......... all sorts of good stuff! I opted for a Destroyer Escort (DE750) that operated out of Charleston. It turned out to be good duty.
Enjoy yourself,
Jim

What a great start on adulthood! Stand tall Charlie (and you too mom).Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.
Luck occurs when preparation and opportunity converge.
Merry Christmas ya'll
