Hot Rods NZ style: Beach Hop 2013

Here's a link to photos from New Zealand's annual Beach Hop event.
We were there; but our car never made the photos.

These are from a 'private' forum...the official Beach Hop site doesn't appear to have posted any up yet...
    Enjoy!

Roger,,that will start with a road trip to California,I think.. An old friend, who has been living in Tracy, for about 20 years, shipped his,,his son's,and good friends' roadsters down here early this year,,to do Beach hop,2013 Street rod nationals, and as many other smaller events they can fit in..Not sure when Sparrow and his son are shipping their rods back,,but that is the second time that Sparrow's 32 has been down here.. (red roadster with 32 on side)and black roadster with green frame..The other one was built in Georgia, and driven cross country two weeks later..(black,red wheels,caps,etc..)
There are a few more pic links, but they are on facebook...

Now that looks like a lot of fun. I went through most of them and have to say I still don't like rat rods, especially the one with solid wheels, but everything else - top notch. Thanks JB and Robin (well, actually Lynda).

One question - why are some still LH steering and others RH? Owner's choice or requirement to convert?

Dave,,the left hookers have all entered the country, probably,in the last 10 years or so..The older RHD American cars,(like Lynda's Customline),were NZ new, from Canada,or they were converted..We are allowed to run LHD here, with no probs, which most of us do..However,,there are a lot of ''if so's and where fores'' in the late LHD vehicles..We have a 20 year rule, which lets us bring LHD cars/pickups/vans in to the country as we want..We are allowed to import near new/new LHD vehicles,,BUT...there is a criteria involved..EG,,it must be,two door,eg,coupe, convertible, etc,,not available here,in RHD form,,and it must be a limited production model,,e.g,,Mustang GT,Cobra,,P51A,Hurst Camaro,,SRT Challenger, etc, with a limited production run..One of the reasons we have so many new/near Mustangs here,,cos they are favorably priced, and a guy in Tauranga is importing them, from a dealer in Texas, with a HUGE stock..

    What he said.
BUT...you can make a choice...our bus would've been allowed to enter as a lhd; but we opted to convert to rhd.
    Our choice.

In over fifty years of driving I've driven in excess of 3,000,000 miles, in buses, rigid chassis trucks, artic trucks, truck and trailer...I've driven just about every type of motor vehicle with wheels or tracks.
With one exception all have been rhd.
(That exception was tracked draindiggers. All, even the English ones are lhd...can't know why.)
So rhd is what I'm used to...hence our decision to convert...personal choice.

Good choice with your bus. I have seen a couple expensive driver errors in Britain with vehicles from the Continent.

There is little as 'interesting' as driving a LHD car on the left hand side of the road area - such as our US Virgin Islands - makes the passenger even more nervous.

One must trust his passenger's judgement, especially on two lane curvy roads with limited passing options, as they will likely be asked, "Are we clear to pass?" on occasion, or even on a regular basis. Kind of makes the drive a "Team Experience"!

Many many moons ago when I was young and had money a friend of mine and I did the "buy a new BMW (bike) and pick it up at the factory" deal. Instead of the usual ride to the port and ship it, we spent 3 weeks touring in Europe on our new scooters. A great trip, fantastic scenery, etc.....then we took the ferry across the channel and into England where we would eventually ship the bikes. Everything went fine in England with the wrong side of the road driving---until we hit the first traffic circle!!!!!!----had to make 4 1/2 laps around that sucker until I figured out how to get on the road we wanted!!!!!! Then, we parked and spent some time thinking through this drive on the left deal until we proceeded!!!!

Ah yes - the 'roundabout experiences'. We were going to the UK and Ireland every year while a daughter lived there. The first trip was as Dave S mentioned - several complete circuits around more then one until someone gave me a break. After that, not a problem other then the normal one middle finger salutes which I didn't have a lock on receiving

Thought the Brit's favored the backhand "Victory V" symbol, Dave! Maybe that's "evolved" now to the more efficient single digit, or else they recognized you for a Yank' and translated to ensure understanding.

    I can relate to that!
Our last trip to the States saw me turn a 2011 Mustang in its own length, going from about 40 mph one direction to about 60 mph the other.
I'd inadvertantly driven the wrong way onto a highway 'off' ramp and had a 40 ton KW coming straight at me!
God alone knows what the truck driver thought...but I got one helluva fright.
Habit is hard to shake; you've got to be totally aware all the time.
I still shudder to think of the potential consequences from my lapse of concentration.
