Gardens, who all here has one?

When I was growing up we usually had a garden. We were a family of 5 and raising our own live stock and vegetables was just what we did. Well, now we don't do the live stock but my parents still do a small garden. My wife and I finally are at a place where we can have our own garden. So on Mother's Day I tilled up the spot and the next day her and her mother planted it. It isn't huge, but will be nice to get some of our own stuff out of the back yard again. When our kids get old enough I'll start with live stock again. Just some pigs, a cow or two, and chickens. By that time I hope to have our own place to do it as we just rent in town right now. Well any how, here is our little garden.

    Last week

    Today

The weeds got terrible the first month and a half. My wife promised she'd weed it but the reality of having 3 kids under 2.5yrs old caught up with her. So we have got the weeds out, and I've been trying to water it in the mornings before I head to my shop, before I go to work. I'm no expert gardener, but I'm wondering will it hurt to over water it since we seem to be getting 0 rain, and it is super hot now. By over watering, I mean water it normally in the morning, and then at 11pm or so when I get home from work. I'm guessing doing this can't hurt since we have no rain. What are your thoughts, and let's see some of your gardens.

We have had a garden for maybe 10 years now. Wife puts up tomatos, pickles, and beans. A thing we learned is after you turn it over plant your plants or seeds then(right away) before the weeds start sprinkle PREEN on the ground follow instructions. After putting Preen down do not hoe or rake just have faith you can hand weed but probably won't have to. Over watering will be rough on the tomatos we were out of town and had someone water for us and a couple days they let it run to long. I have put in a timer now but afraid its to late. We normaly water at about 6 AM for an hour or 1.5 hr. things are fine with that and its been in the 90s here. Corn doesn't do that well as we don't want to use that much garden for it. You can see the bottoms of the tomato plants are dried up that's from to much water. Or so we were told. Rabbits are a BIG pain in the butt, I shoot them.

Can you add the preen after it is planted and going? I'm watering using a 2 or 3 gal watering can because our hose doesn't reach. I'm going to be changing that. It definitely sounds like your garden gets more water than mine. I watered it Monday morning and this morning. Not good in my book. I'm going to do better other wise this will be a waste of a "grow". As far as corn, you're right there. My friend and I used to till up 10 acres of his Dad's ground each year and grow sweet corn. It seemed like every other year you'd have a good crop. We quit that as seniors in high school. I think if we would have spent more money on fertilizer and weed spray, it would have had a much better out come. Oh well. Haha

You can put the preen down anytime but you want all the weeds gone when you do it. If you rake hoe or till the ground after the preen it doesn't work anymore?? read instructions. You can see the ground in my garden and we haven't weeded since first day. Around here if you want Sweet corn you go see a farmer they will give you sweet corn so you don't grow it. They grow Hybred seed corn around here and they don't want to risk cross pollination.

That's why we can't grow it at my parent's place. The farmer around them grows seed corn every year and they will jump the fence and detassle it. Dicks.
