Never had much use for the M14, the flash suppressor bent too easily, the hinged butt plate was a joke, and IMHO it was a poorly balanced POS. Also the stock had a bad habit of breaking in half just past the receiver. And they also jammed easily on fully automatic.Ken Thomas

Got a real nice Springfield M1 Garand service grade about a year or more ago from CMP. It took about 2-3 months to arrive. It came with a new stock, much nicer than many I've seen. I took it out to the range and was hitting within 2 inches of the bulleye, at 100 yards using the stock sights. Pretty darned acurate out of the box, especially for me!
I'd love to take one of their Garand gunsmith cleasses where you get to build your own rifle and take it home with you! Well worth the experience and price!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Windage and elevation and you'll be able to put them in the bull at 500 yards. I shot expert with the M1 in boot camp and NO SCOPE and it's always been my opinion that if you can't hit it with iron sights you need to stay home.Ken Thomas

I had M1 in basic in 1963, qualified expert, had m14 later in 7th cav at ft benning ga---liked both of them----maybe it was because the government was paying for the ammo. on the farm 22 lr was a luxury round and mostly used shorts because of $$$
flash suppressor bending and stock breaking-was that a case of training (bayonet)???????
The M1 I got from CMP has new stock and new 308 chambered barrel. I picked it out of several dozen and got it so I can use same ammo in 3 rifles I got---------a custom FN action/douglas barrel I built back in mid 70s, the M1 Garand and now the M1A(m14) just different magazines--
I agree with the iron sights altho my custom FN does have a 2 3/4 wide view scope with NO iron sights(didn't want to cut barrel) and ruger mini 30 has scope but rear sight is broken/missing and as soon as I can get a replacement rear sight the scope will be removed-------

In the Marine Corps dropping your rifle is tantamount to burning the flag and you always have some idiot with 5 thumbs and rifles get dropped. The flash suppressor on the 14 will occasionally bend if it hits the ground just right. Not very much, but enough to throw off the track of the projectile. I have seen M14 stocks break when they were being used to help someone over an obstacle.Ken Thomas

I was wondering about the stocks breaking as it seems to me that most rifle stocks are pretty much the same in that area---now, if you toss in hitting the ground with the butt end as you dive to ground to break your fall or striking something like one of those training posts??? with it==========

All I know Jerry is that I vowed that if I had to take it into combat the flash suppressor and hinged butt plate would have to go.Ken Thomas

What I meant by free sighting and not using a scope for accuracy, is that at 100 yards my vision isn't so hot on seeing a tiny bulls eye, verses using a scope to bring it all into focus. Was a problem for me even as a kid, had to get glasses in the third grade! Shooting closer than a 100 yds. I can see well enough to blame my accuracy on lack of personal ability vs. visibility! Jerry I have a mini 14 that shoots pretty well too. I worry that both rifles may be on the Gubberment takeaway list if local politicians have their way. Any semi auto rifle(even my 22lr) owned in California, is under attack, by naive Politicians who are labeling them assault rifles, a term that never existed when any of these weapons were manufactured, but was made for political grandstanding." I'm just now working a deal with my buddy in Kansas to build me an AR. I have no semi auto anything right now. Just rifles, shot guns, and a Nagant pistol. I got into the gun game late and it doesn't help my low funds for projects account.Ryan

I have a family member who has a non-violent felony charge(teenage crap) & he & his wife live a bit from the nearest police officer. He wanted something to protect himself & family & I told him to by a flare gun since you don't need a gun owner card. This may be a bit over kill but you wouldn't have to load as often ....joe

The biggest game I shoot anymore are the occasional gofers in the yard so I’ve sold off most of my larger caliber stuff. I have a few long guns left but my favorite is my Granddads first rifle, this little Hamilton. They were only built between 1899 and 1901 so it’s fairly rare. It was in pretty rough shape when I got it, so it was restored and among other things got a new barrel so it could be shooter. I also built the case to keep it in (I hate working with wood, but it came out OK). It’s surprisingly accurate at short range.
I occasionally refer to it as my 2 dollar rifle in a hundred dollar case.
As small and light as it is it’s ideal for teaching my grandkids to shoot.

Yep. And I seem to move 1 thing and it displaces something else with 1/2 of that landing on the workbench and then I forgot where I was going with this other thing and I'll see something else that...
