I went back and looked again, this time stopping the frame; and do you know what?
I think you're right on the button!
Even to the comment of it looking silly.
(But that's not our business . . . the owner/builder obviously likes it, and really, that's all that matters.

cor·o·net [kawr-uh-nit, -net, kor-, kawr-uh-net, kor-] Show IPA
noun
1.
a small crown.
2.
a crown worn by nobles or peers.
3.
a crownlike ornament for the head, as of gold or jewels.
4.
an ornament, more or less pedimental in form, situated over a door or window.
5.
the lowest part of the pastern of a horse or other hoofed animal, just above the hoof.
Personally, I question whether this particular Dodge ever deserved definitions 1 thru 4, but with the "modifications" shown in your pics, it rapidly moved towards definition #5 or perhaps more rearward on the animal.....
As for your "insufficiently-coffeed" attempt to rename it as a Comet, maybe your Mercury is just in retro-degrade or maybe you just subconsciously wanted to apply some of the like-named cleanser to it in hopes it would lengthen or just go away....."It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. I TOTALLY AGREE, Johnboy, but along with his right to build it comes our right to have an opinion about it! At the end of the day, I suppose no one really gives a rat's arse about either but it makes for some fun conversation as long as nobody gets their panties in a wad....."It is not much good thinking of a thing unless you think it out." - H.G. Whatcho talkin' 'bout Randall?
As far as his build beiing right or wrong, he sure did drive it thru a lot of crowded parking areas in order to finally find a place where most everyone would be at one time during the day. However, he could have parked behind me but no one would have seen it in San Antonio.

Like Mike says, if you add a layer of foam it tends to hine the slight bump, and you can even sand the foam surface slightly to really smooth it out.
