An awesome event! Lousy as the coverage was on racing of any kind in the 60's about the only way we found out anything was in SPEED SPORT which came every Thursday, then waiting for Hot Rod magazine at the end of the month!

Like Dave said, we didn't have the Speed Channel so I found out about it at work the next day. Didn't get to see it until they ran it on a News Reel at the Drive In Theater. Nice to watch it 50 years later too, thanks. meller

No burnout, no wiping the tires, no last minute tune up, no setting bottle pressure...

just get it to the line - and GO!

The good days, I remember also.

About the only televised racing I remember was the once in a blue moon coverage on Wide Wold of Sports. When any racing was on.....especially drag racing, you couldn't pry me out from in front of the TV.

I grew up a salt flats kid. Pops was more into that Mom not so much! This was one that pops was involved with but 4 years before I was around. I keep this in my office to remember where everything started for me a long time ago. Never was into drag racing for some reason? Even now I couldnt tell you what the record is... 330mph or so in the 1/4 mile? So I guess that makes me over the hill or ultra young? Sorry my puter doesnt have sound... what year was the 200 mph broken?

Got really involved in circle dirt burnin' about that time, next one after the 200 mph passes came into being is 240 Gordy, then I was involved in Drag Racing when Don went 270 for the first time! Had my shop then everybody came over for coffee at about 10AM every day and had the current issue of 'Digger on the counter with the huge headline and picture showing Garlits hitting 270!!!!---Now if I could just remember where it was, my feeble memory wants to put the event at the 'Gators maybe????

I remember but at 16 yrs old at the time when I could get on hwy 99 go north to raisin city strip or south on 99 40 miles from famosa strip, Garlits was just a competitor to many of the west coast "kids". I didn't think anyone was as good as the local heroes. As time went on I think everyone every where began to love and respect Don Garlits who really has to be one of the very best ever.

No matter what the Future brought, you must give credit to the "Pioneers" and not only in Drag Racing. Someone has to kick down the door.
