    Quote from the original article:

"Correction: This article originally said that, due to the rotation of the Earth gradually slowing down over time, this winter solstice would feature the longest night ever.

I got this wrong. The Earth's rotation is gradually slowing on an extremely long timescale, but on a shorter year-to-year basis, geologic factors can alter the speed as well.

Data indicates that the rotation speed has actually sped up slightly over the past forty years (likely due to melting of ice at the poles and the resulting redistribution of the Earth's mass), and before that, the trend was up-and-down for most of the 20th century — so, as far as we know, the longest night in Earth's history likely occurred in 1912. Change in mass wasn't the point. Redistribution of it was. However, I doubt I'll notice those few nanoseconds. . .

    Earth Rotation

Of course, like when an Ice Skater pulls her arms in and speeds up!

Spin a top. There are a lot of forces in play.

The earth is also spending more summer time in the northern hemisphere and less in the southern hemisphere due to the wobble about the axis. More land mass in the northern hemisphere means more solar conversion to heat.

The real solution to global warming is to attach a giant harmonic balancer to the south pole.

I'm in for getting projects done. Ice and snow, well, I can deal with it. If I have to, I suppose.

I bet it's all the billboards. They are acting as a drag against the air making the earth go slower. Go to Branson, Missouri - there is the proof. They have so many billboards that the town is years behind.... Or perhaps they act as a a sail and windy days are shorter days?....

I'll get on it, and break out the scientific calculator.

That is, right after the national procrastination meeting. I think i's coming up.

I'll check on that soon as I can.
