Pepi, I have two that I use regularly, a Canon EOS 60D with an 80-200 telephoto that is very powerful if you want other than "automatic" point & shoot; and a SONY CyberShot pocket camera that's great for day to day use, point & shoot with 5X optical zoom and 12.2MegaPixel capability. If you're not wanting to do your own settings on aperture/speed, and plan to basically use the automatic features you don't need anything like the Canon EOS 50D or 60D. Look at the pocket cameras that have got some phenomenal zooms now, and they will do everything you need. Sony CyberShot, Canon PowerShot, etc, etc.Roger

If you're looking at DSLR's check out the Canon EOS 70D package from Costco, if you're a member. It's a great camera, and NIKON has a comparable model, too. I like the Canon because my hands are big, and it's a better fit for me. http://www.costco.com/Canon-EOS-70D-...100129567.htmlRoger

I have a 3200 Nikon package and love it. Will do more than my capabilities any time. I used 35mm for a long time and missed the ability to really set up different exposure rates, time frames and such. Costco or Best Buy in a package with 2 different lenses and bag. Mine with the big memory has ability to video for over 2 hours or about a bazillion pictures.

I've always been partial to Nikon, used their SLR's and love their DSLR's. I have the D90, that I take everywhere. I have a pretty good selection of lenses up to 1000 zoom. Wife got me the D810 for Christmas, only just scratched the surface on using that one. The D90 is a great everyday camera, trouble free, durable and takes great pictures.

Pepi,
I'd say that if you're jumping into the DSLR arena your biggest question is whether to go the less expensive mirror mechanism with the smaller image sensor, or whether you want to jump up to the full frame DSLR with the large image sensor. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and I tend toward the smaller image sensor providing a bit less distortion at the corners, but folks who do mostly landscape and protrait (people) photography (professionals) lean toward the full frame sensors. Full frame has its own lens family, so its a choice that really needs to be made before you jump into the pond. Some basics to explain the differences between them - Full-frame digital SLR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and http://digital-photography-school.co...me-still-best/Last edited by rspears; 01-27-2015 at 06:32 AM.

My Canon has a 28-135 mm lens
I decided to go with Canon while on a trip out west where we took about 7000+ pics with an Olypic? point and shoot----after buying an extra battery on the road $$$$$$$$ and then an inverter so we could charge the two batteries, added a third battery, smoked the inverter-------decided that a good method of choosing a new camera was to obserbe what the orientals ( being PC ) were using------at Yellowstone Old Faithful (one place where there was lots of people/cameras) they all had Canon------------got a refurbished ( so they sid) eos 50d off e bay-was brand new, zero shutter clicks---because 60 and 70d were out and this was left over earlier model---------2 differences-chip in this one is COMPACT flash and doesn't do video-------

No need here for the full frame format, or print large photos . My pictures are displayed via computer or posted online, so mid range DSLR is where the primary intreats lies. I do want sharp crisp photos that is a must, the ability to shoot low light and timed exposures, a reason for the DSLR quest.
Looked over Costco's prices I see no note worthy advantage in the pricing compared to other photography resources. On some camera models they are the same within pennies of the manufactures quotes.
I thank all for the input always good to read what folks like and the reasons for that.I have two brains, one is lost and the other is out looking for it

This morning I sent one of my boys the Costo listing of all digital cameras, and pointed out the Sony a5100 package, and right beside it the Canon SL1 which both have deep discounts, bringing them to $699 w/ two lenses and free shipping. I think that's pretty far below the manufacturer's pricing on both of those, but I may be wrong... I noticed that the final price is not shown until you click the item, then the sale price pops in.Roger
