Sideline Project
Last summer I had several walnut trees around the place that needed to come down for a variety of reasons, and I happened upon a fellow not far away that has a portable band saw mill - SCORE!! I got my logs assembled up near the barn, built a drying rack under the lean-to shed roof, and stacked several hundred board feet of 5/4 planks, stickered to dry. Here's the mill, cutting one of the logs.

A couple of months back my wife shared that she really, really would like for me to abandon the kitchen island work surface and move my laptop somewhere else, along with the accumulation of notes, bills, spreadsheets, etc, etc that tend to accumulate. So, I set about to look for a desk, but everything I found just didn't "fit" with what I wanted. Engage brain, several hundred board feet of nice walnut dried for 6 months or more, all the necessary tools...... MAKE IT!
Here's the result - the legs are each one 1" square tube with three 3/4" tubes spaced evenly on a 1/8" pad that's 3.5" square. A 1" tube rectangle on top, with 3/4" accent pieces across. It's nothing special, but it functions, and the "look" is what I wanted!
Raw edge front & back, as well as on the bottom of the drawer front. Finish is a mix of boiled linseed oil, spar varnish and mineral spirits, something like six or seven coats with hours of drying time between. Mama's happy, I like the result, seems like a win-win! Sometimes even the blind squirrel finds a nut!

Almost art deco, I like it..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Looks like fun and it has to be satisfying. Also a nice thought to be able to say "Yours is the only one"!

That looks bloody gorgeous.
You are indeed a clever bugger.

Well, our good months run from around early April through mid-November, even into early December some years with a bit of Indian Summer, where we get a hard cold snap in our Fall, but then some warming for several weeks which is a great time. Like jb says, the Ol' Marais River Run is a really nice regional show, set in an old park with gobs of huge trees. There was talk last year that they may limit the entries to around 1500 or so, as it seems to keep growing.... It's a nice show, with all kinds of vehicles. The walk-about's not so bad, and another way is to pull the car out of it's spot and cruise the ring road, doing a look-see as you go! Of course that misses all of the cars parked back in the trees, but it gets a bunch. It's always mid-September, this time September 19 & 20. Heck, if you're comin' it might light a fire under me to get the roadster done, and we can take two - you can follow, so you stay in the correct lane!!Roger

It was at the turnoff from Waitomo Caves that a newly-wed Canadian tourist was killed a couple of years back; married a logging truck head on.
