I tried the image optimizer software that was posted yesterday.

It greatly reduces the storage space for your photos. The link below will take you to one of my recent posts. I replaced the first two photos with optimized versions and posted both the original and optimized versions of the third photo. The only issue I've had with the software is it does not offer the optimizing option, if I right click on a single photo. It only seems to work if I right click on a folder of photos. My camera puts all pictures taken on a given day in a single dated folder. Of course, I can easily move copies of photos to some other folder if I want to optimize them. The optimizer creates a whole new folder for the optimized version of the photos, so you could also just delete any photos that you did not want optimized.

My photobucket library currently has 278 photos, that take up 22% of my free space. Most of the pictures were taken with my 7 megapixel camera, but some were copied from other websites. I expect to use the optimizer frequently, now that I'm using an 18 megapixel camera that would use up a lot of photobucket storage space.

I not only don't want to use photobucket because their limits would have my pics disappearing from many areas, not just on this site------


And I definitely don't want to use a FOREIGN site to post even ONE BIT of info about me or anything I have done or do--Its bad enough here in the USA with all the NSA stuff----


Between what I do in the shop here, races or race team shops I visit , shows , and our travels around the country I find that I am actually taking more pics in order to get some detail about high speed movement ( love the 6.3 pics per second for race stuff) I buy my 4gb compact flash chips in groups of 10 and they do about a years worth of photos------

I just noticed that I took 220 pics at rt 66 NHRA this weekend and I didn't even go on Saturday nor do I spend a lot of time taking pics during runs as then I can't see the race looking thru a view finder

I'm not using a foreign website to post anything. All I've done is download software, that my Norton security claims to be safe. After that, there is no connection with the foreign website - all they did is provide free software.

Someone who knows more about this topic point me to specifics about a better way to post pics. I won't come close to running out of free space at photobucket, for my current build log. That build log is likely to be my first, last and only one, just like the hot rod. I don't expect to build another.

I hadn't been aware of "Image Optimizer" until Glenn posted his example - Very Sad.... and it's indeed a great piece of freeware - easy to use, and you keep the original high resolution images segregated by folder vs having two of every file in one folder as Windows Live Photo Gallery does it. As Glenn pointed out there is nothing lost, including the resolution of the total image. The only warning I'd offer is that if a person goes into the existing PhotoBucket files and "optimizes" the files to gain storage space the links to other places those photos might be linked (like here on a CHR thread) will be broken, and one would have to go back and edit each post to re-link.

Dave, I fully understand that you didn't say that you were promoting modifying your existing PhotoBucket files, I'm simply pointing out the potential hazard of that act, should anyone be thinking of it.

I did exactly as Roger noted - optimized the files in my computer, uploaded them to photobucket, then copied the new location information and replaced it in my post. I'll then delete the old high res photos from my bucket. I'll use it on future posts, but won't bother to replace any more of my pics. At least I know that I won't use up my free space while posting on my current build log. It's got to be more than half way done.

I've used the image optimizer software on the last several posts that I've made. The images seem adequately clear to me and I'm using a lot less of my free photobucket storage space. I do notice that I've got an advertisement in the bottom right corner of every picture, but that's the price of free.

Am I missing something? I take all my phone pics at high resolution and then email them to myself.....and the phone asks what resolution that I want to mail. For pics for emailing or posting, I choose a lower res. and I save them as such. But, I still have the high res original on my phone for those times I want to read the brand of t-shirt that the fly is wearing.
