Winter Storm NE USA
Wow! Looking at the weather reports from the area from around Nashville all the way up into the extreme NE and feeling thankful that we only got a skiff of the white fluffy stuff here in the Heartland. One friend in Maryland said that a neighbor had a huge old pine tree blow over in the high winds, coming down on their garage. Better than hitting the living area, but still a huge pain! Hoping that our members in the Tennessee/Virginia/PA/New York/New Others/MA/MN areas are doing OK with the massive snowfalls and high winds.Roger

My oldest daughter, who is stationed in DC, had to go to Augusta, Georgia and hopefully will miss most of that mess. You would think that with all of the hot air that comes out of that neck of the woods a snow storm wouldn't last very long.Ken Thomas

I'm at 23" and counting in northern VA. Will probably get another couple inches before it stops tonight. Fortunately no major issues for me. Just lots of digging out to come.

We're about 10 to 12 inches of snow. This house has trees on 3 sides and the winds have been clocked at over 50 mph. I just got back in from plowing for 3 hours. When I started it was light and fluffy, now it's turning wet.. You can see it in the branches bending too!
Hope that isn't your tree/house MrMustang!

They can have the "miserable white ship" as my dad calls it. Well, edited for content... I wish they'd keep the cold air too. Currently 28*F here in central GA.
But seriously, I hope they get through it OK. People are going to die needlessly. That sucks..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Mum and I were watching the international news last night on tele. and we both wondered if those poor guys out on tractors fitted with snow blowing devices receive an above average wage to be out clearing the snow in shocking conditions. Heck some of the tractors didn't even have enclosed cabs to keep the driver dry and warm. What amazed us was the fact that they were clearing the footpaths yet people were told to stay home until the worse was over.I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

I was out for 3 hours or so, settin' on my cub cadet tractor with no cab.. I live a half mile from the road so I don't need a footpath, I need to clear the roadway to get to the main road out front.
The intention is to get the cars off the road so the city / town can clear the roadway. Therefore you need to clear a foot path for the pedestrians.

Crikey but I feel quite sorry for you poor things.
I've spent a few days recently trying to get a stormwater drain in across fill behind a retaining wall.
It's down in a little valley beside the track leading to my shed.
I've been starting work every morning around 7:00 - 7:30 am, and I'm outta there by 10:30.
It's just too hot!
It's a sun trap down there, and any air movement goes right across to top; so there's not a breath of breeze.
The sweat trickles down onto the inside of my glasses and I can't see.
So I sympathise with you poor fellas.

A friend in Maryland posted this summary (page one of two, and only one posted), and I thought it might be of interest here.

We don't often get to 118, that's Phoenix. Last July, we did the testing of the flathead cooling on the roadster when it was 110 out, wasn't too bad with the top up. With the cowl vent open and the back window out, there is lots of air flow. I don't think it would be good in Phoenix at that time of year though.....that's why we built the 39 since it has roll up windows.

We did a project in Casa Grande years back, and I went out with the client to scout out the plant site, and the location where we would be putting in a pump station at the big irrigation ditch that runs through the region. It was August, and to say the least it was memorable! The construction manager stopped by to pick up an insert thermometer for his gas grill on his way to the site one summer day, and left it on the seat of the truck, all windows up tight, pushing 118F. We got into his truck to go to lunch and he about burned his hands on the steering wheel, then picked up the thermometer and dropped it! Moved it to see the dial and it read 185F... Harsh country!Roger
