If it's good enough for Jack...................
...............it's good enough for me. That would be Jack, aka Henry Rifle, not Jack F. What is it? Moving to Texas (sorry brother Falcon, Idaho was close, but not the choice for us). Now, I don't know Jack (hey!!! don't agree with that part of the sentence so quickly!)...........any better than most who've only met him on these boards, but he strikes me as a thoughtful guy. After a few years of evaluating some options we made our choice. Next week it's load 'em up and roll out time for our household after spending a good part of 4 decades in the Northwest.
Biggest change in the realm of the hot rod world is going to be the garage. I'll be cutting my space roughly in half. In the process of prepping for the move nearly all my shop equipment found new homes. The big air compressor, the blast cabinet, one of the welders, plasma cutter, and so on are all gone. Seven decades of wear and tear on the body had made using some of that stuff pretty difficult, but I'll still miss the convenience of having much of it when the spirit moves me. I've still got the main tool box and most of the smaller shop tools, so won't be without basic fab equipment, just not the heavier stuff. The reality is likely that the '32 sedan in process will be the last build, and of late I've farmed out most of that labor to my pal Greg to perform. Once he's done I'll have to figure out how to get it down to us so that I can do the final paint and assembly. Sounds simple enough.........eh?
We'll be about an hour north of Austin so plenty of car related activities should be available to continue the old habits. The two roadsters and the Mustang will have an enclosed ride down next week as well, so a crowded garage is assured. Even though we'll have internet access via phone, as a practical matter we'll be going "dark" for about a week or so after next Monday until we're able to set up the new internet connection.
Moving is an intense project and has eaten a lot of time, especially in the past month or two with buying the new house, selling the old, planning, arranging, packing, and soon shipping. Whew! But now...............on to the next new adventure in life.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Wow! It's not Costa Rica, but the hill country NNE of Austin is a really nice part of Texas, and good people. I was in Corpus Christi for several years a long time ago, and the area around Austin has a lot going for it. Exciting times!Roger

Heck Bob, I'll be making a move in the near future also but to Florida. My biggest problem is there is NO garage for me at all. So I have to put something up to keep Marge & what tools & stuff I am keeping in. Looks like one of those metal carports will have to do for now to house Marge in & a huge shed to keep my tools in. But Like yourself I have abused my body over the decades so I do very little wrenching on anything anymore unless it's a have too. Marge will be most likely the only vehicle I'll touch from now on, because I don't even change my oil in my 06 Yukon.
Good luck & travel safe during your move........joeDonate Blood,Plasma,Platelets & sign your DONORS CARD & SAVE a LIFE

Crikey!
Exciting times!
Good luck with the move; and we hope that not too much gets broken/lost in transit.
I'd sure hate to do it myself; the thought of shifting seven vehicles, 1200 die-cast models, and around 12,000 MacDonald toys, let alone all my tools and 'stuff' would be overwhelming.
I think I'm stuck where I am until I fall off my perch. Then the kids can sort everything out...they'll enjoy that...not!

I wasn't sure I'd like Florida, after Arizona and California, but I'm gettin' used to it. I really like the hard rain we get off the Gulf once a week or so. I go outside and just stand and watch it. It pleases me. Joanie and I are cranking up a small business that will fund some acreage and a new home build a little farther north, maybe south of Ocala. We both want some livestock and a place for the kids to come and visit for a long spell.

Thanks for the welcomes soon to be fellow Texans, looking forward to completing the loop..................gettin' tired of packin' boxes. On the other hand, I've done a lot of "okay............not really going to need that...." kind of deal. I've long been one of those, "I'll keep that.........you never know when it might come in handy..." some of you understand that I'm sure. Well, this is the pay back. But it's not as hard as I might have imagined to let go of some of that stuff, just need to be practical (ugh!). Still, we're going to take up most of the moving van trailer, and an entire enclosed auto transport, so we'll be helping a few mortgage payments this month. For all that we've sold/thrown away/given away a good sized pile of "stuff" we won't be starring on Tiny House tv shows anytime soon. It wouldn't surprise me if there will be more shedding of "stuff" during the unpacking, "where we gonna put THIS?" phase. All part of the adventure, and glad we're able to do it.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

I'm not sure if the wisdom of using my experience as a model, but I digress . . .
Welcome to Texas, Bob! I think you'll find it a great place to live - even with the summers being hotter than the hobs of hell.
I understand your problem with shedding 'stuff' and simplifying life. I did it in stages. I sold stuff when I moved from Overland Park, KS to Virginia Beach. Then I bought more stuff there, and shed some when we moved to Italy on assignment. We took too much to Italy, and stored too much in VA beach. We shed more stuff in Italy, then more again when we left Virgina. We brought too much to Texas, then thinned it out again while setting up the house, then again when I finished my '34.
It all reminds me of George Carlin's routine on "stuff." I saw him do that routine live in Kansas City.
Welcome, pilgrim! You'll love Texas.
