    Can you identify this car?

This photo of my mom and a friend was taken in Hillsboro, IL on 04/21/1940. I've searched and searched, but can't identify the car. Any ideas?

Certainly has some similarities to 38 Plymouth pic in my Encyclopedia of American Cars 1930-1980---headlights seem big but acceptable--price was around $700

Thanks, Robert and Jerry. I'm pretty sure you nailed it. With the spotlights, radio antenna, bumper guard and whitewalls, it looks like Dad added a few options.

This photo, taken in the summer of 1943 at my maternal grandmother's house, kicked off my love of cars and hot rods. At least, I like to think so.

I can't identify this car either, but it looks like it may be a Ford. Based on what I can see of the shape of the grille, I don't believe it's the '38 Plymouth. My dad enlisted in the Navy in 1943, and I assume the car was sold.

The rippled trim on the hood and mudguard shriek Ford to me too; but what can be seen of the grille has me a bit baffled.

I'll avoid the easy joke about diapers................ Cool pic!

I don't think that's a Ford. The hubcap doesn't have the right shape for the wide five wheels that would have been appropriate for that style grille. That and the closest shaped grille to that would be a '38 standard which wasn't plated below the trim piece. Can't tell for sure, but also looks like there might be a character line stamped in the fender.
