Ohio State Fair Ride Accident
Have any of you seen this yet? I hope none of your family or friends were on this ride. May the 18 year old Marine recruit rest in peace, and hopefully the others injured make it through it alright. What a tragic situation.

Here's the part that shows the ride break apart.

I only read the headline.
There should be greater inspections of these things. It gives me the impression that they are just assembled and disassembled without oversight..

In a few different news reports the governor says these are all heavily inspected and this ride was no exception. It just passed all inspections and they were not done by the carnival ride owner/crew. Who knows if it will become public what happened. It is mechanical and anything can happen as we all know. There are extreme forces put on those types of rides for sure. I would be lying if I said I didn't think of things that could fail when I climb in or on some of those types of rides.Ryan

That's debatable. Could be there was a stress fracture in one of the main beams that couldn't be seen with the human eye. Very similar to the DC10 crash in Sioux City, Iowa in 1989. A couple of years after the crash a farmer plowing a field came up with the remains of the main rotor assembly from engine #2 which upon explosion had ruptured the hydraulic system causing the crash. Upon further investigation it was determined that the main rotor had a stress fracture that had been there since it was manufactured and could only have been visible through a microscope.
I wouldn't ride any fair rides as I haven't trusted them since I was a kid.Ken Thomas

The "inspection" sometimes occurs with nothing more than an exchange of money from the carnival owner to the inspector. That's been the experience here in MD... Bet they're pointing fingers now...Robert

They should condem and outlaw all these crazy dangerous rides
and stick with what we had 50 years ago. The old time roller
coasters that did not go 40 plus mph and maybe a slide or two.

It always bothered me when one went down, wasn't sure if I'd worked on it or not. He was one hell of a pilot and if I remember correctly he was bringing that thing by varying engine power since he'd lost all hydraulics. I seem to remember too that he'd of made it except at the last second before touch down he caught a cross wind that drove the left wing tip into the ground causing the plane to cartwheel and other nasty things.Ken Thomas

No-the hitch hiking guy pulled the power off the wrong engine causing wing to drop into ground causing the flip over
he said they were going too fast and pulled throttles back causing it
All the hydraulic lines went thru a confined area and the fan explosion severed them all ---------there was basicly no aero control, just the engine thrust and it would only turn to the right so they flew circles around and around until over runwayLast edited by jerry clayton; 07-28-2017 at 01:39 PM.

I knew I shouldn't have believed the talking head, that's where I heard the cross wind nonsense. I lost all faith in the NTSB after the crash in Hawaii of the 727/737, don't remember which, that part of the top fuselage skin ripped off. Some clown from the NTSB was being interviewed and was asked if that could have been prevented and he said no way. I thought then why does Douglas X-ray every plane? But then I knew the answer so I knew that clown was full of it.Ken Thomas

The latest news: the support columns were rusted out on the inside. Apparently badly rusted..
