i think the very fist thing we need to do is get the press back to being as neutral as possible politically. get them to report the news and the actual facts of events like they used to way back in the day. guys like walter cronkite reported the news, they didnt give their opinions of what was being reported, they left that up to the people watching the news.
we need to have the press knock off the crap of excoriating candidates on one side of the isle, while propping up the other side.
if we can do that, then we can start getting good candidates running for office again. candidates that will work for the good of the country, instead of building their own power.
and we as a country need to get back to the divisiveness of the current political atmosphere. we need to stop screaming about bull crap, and watch what the politicians actually do. and we need to hold the politicians feet to the fire. if they say they want to repeal and replace something, then we need to make sure tehy actually DO IT, instead of just paying lip service when we give them the control they need to get it done.a man's fate is a man's fate
and life is but an illusion

Great points. The scary thing to me is social media and the ability of complex programming to target, research and sway individuals based on demoographics they collect. Listening to how face book offered to help both parties identify and reach people using a 1000 different versions of the same add or news feed and analyse what each individual responded to, then target them with custom made feeds kind of scares the crap out of me when you realize how many people seem to get their news from these sources. Then add any media source news agency and they will sway what you see and here for maximum effect to their advantage. Funny thing when I was a young adult still learning to cut my teeth at 18 I had some pretty strong opinions that didn't take into account all of the facts out there. Mind you that was over 37 years ago. I took a few lower division college courses and was very influenced by the Political Science classes and the professors teaching them, until in one class the professor gave use an assignent to read two articles in two different magazines about the same event. These were about some president(can't remember if it was Carter or Reagan, featured in Newsweek, and Time magazines. Each gave a completely different slant to what was reported. For the first time in my life I began to see there is always more than one side to any story, so I stopped reacting instantly to what was being said and tried to understand both sides as best as I could. It was a little easier then because the average source of info was newspaper or evening news. It wasn't until Dan Rather and Haroldo Rivera that it became obvious to a lot of us, that people will do whatever they can to reach power and wealth regardless of any facts. I in general don't trust politicians of any flavor, any news program on tv, or radio, and nothing on social media. I agree it would be great for our country and the rest of the world to show more moral integrity, and honesty, I just think it is being brainwashed out of the folks you hear about in the news, and those of us who have higher values and belief systems are never recognized to the point of frustration when the media paints whatever they want people to react to. In other words we focus on the negative and not the positive. It's easy to incite anger, but harder to recognize the good that is all around us, because that's not what makes money for the people who control what we hear on the news and in social media." "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

I don't Post here much, and I try to stay the heck out of Political discussions, but this Thread has fired me up-now, I don't expect a lot of you to agree, but-
I grew up in a Democratic Household, but as time (and my Career) went by I could see I was on the wrong Team. I changed over (to the good side ) about 35 Years ago, and haven't looked back, until-
Stoven's last Post hit me-you know, myself and my better half took a Trip to Ireland in 2009-I was up on the News of the day, and was killing a little time in our Hotel Room in Dublin, watching the News there. After picking my Jaw up off of the Floor, I sat there in stunned silence for a long time, as they reported the same events that I had just seen in the US in a completely different manner (with completely different facts)-it wasn't a Democratic slant, or Republican, it was the Truth-
As it did for Stoven, it did for me-my BS Meter is on high alert all the time now, and I'm mad-I feel like I have lived a lie for Years, and a line from a John Mayer Song keeps running through my Head-"when they own the information they can bend it all they want"-
While I still bleed Red, I simply can't trust them completely (and I sure don't trust the Democrats either)-I watch both Fox AND NBC News (as well as America 1), because I want the truth, not a slant-we are being hoodwinked every day, and I feel that to just watch one side is less than half the truth-
So, (unbelievably to me) I find myself drifting to the middle-as they have said a million times, our Children (and, for most, Grandchildren) are destined to live their lives' at at a lower standard of living than we did (or the Generations before us-to a degree)-truly, our Generation is to blame, and that fact makes me sad-we have failed. Free Love , questioning Authority, etc., etc. and most of the other 60's crap got us here (IMHO)-people have to embrace personal responsibility-
I am demanding more out of Washington (and my local elected Officials)-I realize that we can't have it our way completely-we must find a way to compromise, work together, and move this Country forward-TOGETHER.
This Partisan BS has to slow down-even as this Administration tries to "Drain the Swamp" it is simply too large a Swamp to drain-somehow we must do it, get the Special Interests out (good luck with that), and find a way to get the Train back on the Tracks (we need to be more tolerable of one another)-the Jobs are there, we've just made the Smartphone more attractive than a CNC Machine-
I am not going to go into the things that are happening at Demonstrations today-we are out of control-
There are so many subjects here to discuss, and I could rant on and on, but I'll stop here-if any of this is unnacceptable to this Board please delete (don't lock this Thread please)-
Maybe this is all wishful thinking, however I am just hopeful for a better place (and situation) for my Kids and Grandkids-Last edited by 35WINDOW; 10-23-2017 at 03:07 PM.

I agree. The problem I see everyday is there are too many sheep that will follow and don't care. Whom ever they are following is correct, and that is the way. Period. Yeah, we have a problem. I'd be lying if I didn't say I think of ways to move to Alaska and start a homestead and leave a place for my kids to raise their kids. That doesn't teach them much about the real world though.......
Shine, I heard something on WHO the other day where a group of activists were trying to push the exact thought you just said. Start appointing small business owners to senate positions/government officials etc, and the way this country would be ran would be night and day difference.Ryan

Perhaps this country needs to introduce bracket racing to the world of politics. At least then, a more even or level playing ground could be established for those who want to do good and run for office. As far as the MEDIA goes, the tech inspectors need to bar them every time until they meet the requirements of fair and balanced news reporting as opposed to the opinionated commentary or spin that is overwhelmingly found today. I'm only forty years old but even i remember when the national news could actually run consecutive nightly segments that did not even talk or mention anything about the President AND if they did run an episode that talked about the President, it was sometimes in a positive light and not always 'oh things are bad with the Pres for the 7 millionth day in a row of our reporting, wait till you hear this...'

A good start would be.....NEVER VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT. One term and back home they go. Stumping for re-election and war chests would be a thing of the past. Lobbyists would have a tougher time getting a foothold.

A recent Prime Minister of ours, John Key, (elected three terms in a row,) was just that: a businessman.
He came from a grass-roots background; the son of a solo mum/state-house tenant in a poverty stricken area he worked his way to the top of his profession in the finance industry.
He steered New Zealand through the Global Economic Crisis. When other countries economies were going belly-up John Key's management ensured NZ not only retained the status quo; it actually improved.
That's the type of man that's needed to run a country; a self-made businessman.

Ken I totally agree with you.
It has to be someone who can see things not as they are; but as how the could be.
Someone far wiser than I once said: 'Imagination is of greater value than knowledge.'
That is: the ability to see things as they could be.
I'd reckon that hot-rodders fit that criterion to a T!
