By 2050. They best get on building better electric "hybrids" then. These ideas work better in places like Europe and China where bicycles and motor bikes etc are the primary source of transportation. But of course Cali would jump on the band wagon. Good luck to them. It'll just innovate more technology.Ryan

I figure the way the world is going this may be a mute point come 2050. I do know a retired friend in the California Energy Commision. She said about 15 years ago that she was attending a state meeting with all the energy companies present. Our Governor had stated he wanted 25% of all vehicles to be electric by I believe 2020, the Guys running PG&E(power company) said our grid will not produce enough power, and if you inforce this we will require every household using electric cars to have solar panels on their homes to offset their demand for electricity. Problem with electric vehicles is, you still need to produce energy to charge them, they use more semi precious materials to both operate and store electricity, which demands more mining, coal power, nuclear power, etc, to where at some point people who think they are being "green" aren't!
Bactterys create toxic waste as does, mining and electric power production, including solar panel production, there is always a cost!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Steve,
I listened to an exec from a NE utility recently, and he told folks that on average two houses in a normal residential block could install the added service drop to support an EV charger, and after that any additional installations would require that the feeds from the substation to the neighborhoods be increased in capacity. That's conductor, area drops and transformers, as well as the feed into the homes requesting the added capacity. This is more of an issue in densely populated places than for country folk, but then......
Our local news advised a few days back that the power companies in Kansas were going to increase the rates charged to homes that have solar arrays or wind generators, to support the power company maintenance of the required metering and controls to allow the home generator(s) to synch to the grid, and to feed the grid when their production exceeds their on site demands. It was a short clip, but their lead in was "Having your own solar panels and generators may not be cost effective any longer."Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

Here in Mass. if you had panels prior to this year you received a rebate at the then current price per kW.. then the utilities figured out that they shouldn't be paying out at "their" price, since the panel owner has no overhead like the utility does. The courts agreed... so there went your rate of return!
In other event....
I did take the coupe for it's annual "safety inspection". And did confirm with the shop owner ( former high school classmate and friend) that there are cameras being installed and a whole new piece of testing equipment (cost him 8k!) that records and documents the inspection so "big brother" can later review the process and do what they will.... So... 1984? Isn't it???

I got into a debate with some geniuses at a wedding party the other night. You know, the know it all save the world type. They were going on and on about how they think it;s insane that all the commuter vehicles aren't solely electric powered yet. One of them looked at the other and said, "They've been running the trains with electricity for ever!" I looked at him and asked him if he ever saw the black haze/smoke coming from the top of any newer locomotive? He said no. I said that is from the Diesel powered engine(s) to run the Generator to produce the electricity to power the locomotive. Jack wagons.
People have no clue how much money, resources, and time it will take to get the operating systems in place to allow for this many electric cars. Plus, you can't travel very far with most of them. At work we've had to keep most of the electric only trucks on in town routes which have very few stops. They have a Ford Transit in Minneapolis at the ramp, and it won't make a 30 mile trip in rush hour without needing a tow back.
I am surprised the push for natural gas power dropped off so quickly. My Uncle in Texas was doing CNG conversions and he said the government wouldn't allow companies to build the refueling stations and that is what killed it. Makes sense.Ryan

downtown ft worth is a prime spot. people live downtown, work downtown , eat out down town and pretty much never leave a 10 block area. no need for a car. electric car or scooter .

Also, electric vehicles convert non point pollution to (more) point pollution.
Simply put, the power will now come from the coal fired power plant, to include additional power and pollution to compensate for the efficiency loss. The efficiency loss is resultant of electrical energy converted to chemical energy (charging the battery), converted back to electrical energy..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
