My Boy is signed up for the Guard
I got proud dad moment, my middle boy has signed up for the National Guard, he has always loved the military and always loved the Lord. So what do you do? You join the guard to be a Military Chaplin. He will have to be a Chaplin Guard for awhile first and it sounds like there is an opening for that so he's pretty excited.Seth

“…….I got proud dad moment, my middle boy has signed up for the National Guard,…….”
And you have every right to be proud Seth. Back when I went in (while Vietnam was still going on), the Guard and Reserve was a place to hide from the draft and deployment….. not so any more. I have a lot of respect for people who join.
I haven’t spent a lot of time in church over the years, but the men of God who made the biggest impression on me were the Army Chaplins.
Thank your boy for his service, he has an interesting road ahead.

"......So back then the guard wouldn't go overseas? That's kind of weird, my nephews has been in the guard and been to Iraq twice now......"
Yeah pretty much, a few thousand did go but that was the exception rather than the rule.
So back then the guard wouldn't go overseas? That's kind of weird, my nephews has been in the guard and been to Iraq twice now'
The first page pretty much covers it.

So Seth, I'm curious. An ordained minister in a mainline Christian denomination generally has to have a Bachelor's degree from a theological college or university, or a seminary, and I assumed that military chaplains were the same. Will your son get his education as part of his National Guard service, or am I totally off base on the requirements? As I said, I'm just curious as I'm unfamiliar with the career path.Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

Your exactly right. First he will do one tour as a Chaplin Guard because the Chaplin is non-combative and does not carry a weapon. After that the Guard will pay up to 40K a year for collage . He will be going to college for Theology/Seminary school like you said , he said it would be a 4 year course in college. After that he can be promoted to an official Chaplin. The scary part is guess who are great targets for our Muslim friends? Yep,Chaplins. We are going to a church by me this Sunday for a baptism and the pastor there is a military Chaplin so that will be kinda neat.Seth
