We were in at the same time though I never ran across him. His portrayal of the senior drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket was right on the money for that time period. While watching the movie, if I closed my eyes, I could see and hear my senior drill instructor from 1961. RIP, GunnyKen Thomas

I met him at an event we had at Firebird International Raceway about 15 years ago. Nice guy.

All three of my Drill Instructors were Korean war vets and they had a vocabulary unlike any I had heard. Clint Eastwood's Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge was fairly close, especially in the opening scenes, but R. Lee Ermey as Gunny Hartman was pretty much spot on.
