Trip to Illinois
I'm back in Illinois currently. Mom went into the hospital and passed while I was on the road on the way back. She was almost 92 and had a hard but good life. She's at peace now with Dad.
I'm doing OK, I'm executor of the estate so I've been neck deep in paperwork. Fortunately my brother and sister and I have been getting along well during this process so there are no big family dramas.
I'd love to stop by and see a few of you on the way back, but I get a feeling that by the time I've got things taken care of around here I'll just want to get home.
.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....

Also sorry for your loss, Mike. Her legacy lives on through you, and it's obvious the love you had as a youngster from the way you interact with your grand kids. Godspeed on your trip home. I'll leave a light on....Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

I made it back home yesterday morning. I want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers….they mean a lot.
I and my family are doing OK, mostly adjusting to the new normal. Settling Moms’ estate is going as well as can be expected.
In a way we’ve been getting ready for this since Moms’ stroke 5 years ago. We didn’t know whether she was going to make it, so some things (including planning her funeral) were done way back then. Then last year when she moved into the extended care facility her wishes were to go ahead and distribute family items and sell the house (that was a month I never want to go thru again). Pretty much those were the 2 hardest jobs to get thru. That just pretty much leaves the paperwork and to tie up loose ends to settle the estate.
I’m a little melancholy about the old family farm. When Grandma died in the 1980s, the original farm was split into 3 pieces between my Dad, Uncle and Aunt (Grandma and Grandpas wishes). Dad held on to his acreage and rented it. The land has been in the Patterson family for 120 years and 5 generations have lived there. My brother, sister and I have decided to go ahead and sell it. In a way I guess letting it go now is appropriate. Neither my brother or I had any male children, so when we’re gone there are no more Patterson’s to carry on the name from this branch of the family tree. It was a Patterson who bought the farm and it will be a Patterson that sells it.

I am sorry to hear this, Mike. I hope the lack of drama continues; it's tough enough to deal with without having to mess with a lot of bickering.

I'm glad to hear you made it home alright and things are going as good as they can be considering what the circumstances are. I'm very sorry to hear your family farm is going to be sold but you have to do what you have to do. Farm land is gold around here so at least you're family should see a decent return for the hardship of having to sell it.Ryan
