“…..we have one but never used it…..”

Boy I sure did, but not one exactly like that. That particular style was one of the early ones known as a double spear fork (or double harpoon) type, and was used for loose hay. There were some laying around when I was a kid but they had been pretty much replaced by a style that was more suited for bales rather than loose hay.

They were used in conjunction with a hay trolley to move hay into the haymow in the barn. We mostly used an elevator to get hay into the mows in the 60s but there were still some barns that it was more convenient to use the hooks and trolley.

Of course we used a tractor instead of a horse to lift the hay.

Funny how the terminology changes with the different parts of the country. We say hayloft you say haymow. We have a double spear but I was too young to work it. I would run bales back to the barn and swap to an unloaded vehicle and leave the full, when I got older I loaded the loft or stacked bales in it or whatever ever dad told me to do lol

I'd always heard the term hayloft too, and had to let Google educate me. Arrrgh, it's complicated!! https://thecontentauthority.com/blog/hayloft-vs-haymow

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.
