Found mint 66 ford galaxie 500 xl v8 with orig. 32K, need advice.
I have been seeing this car everyday for the last 2 years without really going down behind our shop to take a close look. I recently went to take a look and spoke with the owner who also leases our shop to us. The 66 ford is in good shape. It has a V8 and looks to have all the options like a/c, radio, auto. The interior is perfect minus a few stains on the seats. The headliner looks new! EVERYTHING on the car is original and intact, even the hub caps, and plastic water bag in the engine compartment (I think thats what it is). The owner says it was his great grandmothers and that is the original miles. The car has sat for 15 years under this huge shady tree behind my shop. I asked him what he would take for her and he asked me to do some research and figure out what its worth. I was wondering if you guys could help me. besides what I have explained the car does have slight rear end damage but the frame is OK. There is some surface rust on the inner wheel wells and on the frame but nothing rusted thru. He says he has the replacement turtle shell for the rear. He states the car ran when parked under the tree 15 years ago. I did notice the fuel tank cap is gone and the whole fuel tank will probably need replacing. Other then that the motor looks all intact. I did notice there was no filter on the carb. WHat do you guys think? I really would love to get this car but this is my first classic resto project and I think I can tackle it but stock on what to offer. SO I want to be fair to the guy and give him what its worth. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I don't know what it's worth to you or him but there was one down the road from here for 1250.oo . And it was running good ,sounds just like what you described 2 door post , baby blue ? , no dents , factory everything. I gave a thousand even and sent it to OKC ,parked it at a buddies lot in town and got 3500.oo 4 it . so it depends where your at ........ and how many people you can get to look at it ........
you really need to look it over . pull up the carpet , crawl under it , REALLY LOOK AT IT ! ( if your planing on keeping it ) don't get clouded ....., take some one with you who isn't into cars to keep your mind/right .......
No matter what we say on a internet forum , " it's you driving ,working, paying on it" some people wouldn't even thing of buying some of the stuff I drag home
I don't think anybody here can give you a good estimate with out going to look at it and checking it out ....... and it still may diffrent from the next .
so you still have to make up your own mind , hope that gives you a little more insite on it tho ........ talk to him ,and see what he thinks is fare.......

I have a 66 galaxie wagon "country sedan" I only payed 500 for it.. the back has a few dents but no water damage or cancer..
I had the windsheild replaced and the crank for the drivers window is broken, as is the vent window on the passenger side
it needs a new exaust and floor pan in the storage area in the back. other than that it has a v8 and runs just fine. I'm redoing the interior the way I want and I'm getting new wheels this weekend. Glaxie has a reputation for being well built. I dont know if they had stoped offering t-bird engines by 66 or not but Galaxies rule. If you can get a good deal go for it!

that doesnt seem to sound like a bad car. i originally was going to offer my farmer neighbor 500.00 for a 66 ford custon 4 dr 72,000 miles that he had parked about 9 years ago. i told him i was going to fix it up and drive the kids around with it he told me take it.
i went over with a good battery 5 gallons of gas and aired up the tires and it fired up and i drove it home.
i have about 3,000 into it right now an its looks great drives great and with the 289 and 3 spd standard(really low rear end) i can get close to 25 mpg as long as i keep it below 65 mph.
i like the larger cars 2dr or 4dr from the mid 60s . as long as the price is right and its looks solid go for it. its a good start.

Hey Al, where the heck is Waldeck, SK.??? I got a decent looking '67 Galaxie 500 2 door hardtop that would work perfect for ya, originally a 289 automatic car. Somebody should rescue it from me before I'm forced to get busy and just hot rod the snot out of it!!!! Gorgeous cars, if this wasn't a public forum, we could exchange stories about the large back seats in the 60's cars, and the opportunities they offered a kid back in the day................Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Sounds like a nice car but what engine does it have? I think the big block cars would fetch a little more possibly.
Dave, in a pinch the fold down Mustang rear seats work well also. Not as roomy and cushy as the Fairlane but very doable. LOL, G.

Its got the big V8 in it. It is the 4 door. I took another look and the chassis is mint. There is no rot on the floor. I know the motors would need to slightly rebuilt just cause the age and how long it has been since it has started up. The carb needs work. I also notcied the fuel tank nozzle has rust on it since there was no gas cap kept on it the whole time. I will offer him $500 and see how it goes. Thanks for the help fellas.

good luck
And from what you said about the gas cap : pull all the lines from the carb back to the tank ( and the tank! ) and replace .
you may find someone around there who can fix your tank if it's not to far gone ? ........ just have to check it out .......

The roadster sounds kewl Al. Should be a real nice looking unit when it's done. At least it won't be the usual 'glass body with 350 and a 350. My partner Bart is building a '28 glass body on deuce rails with a 351 CJ motor, going to be a very nice car.
And G, anything is possible. I used to have a fastback, too.!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

thanks dave
i hope it turns out ok i have never built a complete car before i have sectioned my 78 landcruiser (cut 3 feet out of its length and put it back together as a pickup and worked on my 66 ford but this old steel is a different deal all together, not much to start with . i have come to the opinion that it will not be a traditional t bucket but it will be ok.
i want to be able to drive this thing minimal chrome steel wheels and moon caps flat black paint etc i may not even put headers on it (at leat not right away as i will have to make them( lakers would be nice) . our roads are poor up here so i am bulding the chassis fairly beefy ( it should be for a 500 cadillac anyways) i hope to have the body patched and welded and in primer by end of march.
i am going topost some pics once it actually looks like sotnthing

As for the ford, there are a few things to remember. Dont offer till you hear it run. If the car has low mileage and was parked, there had to be a reason. Listen for spun bearings, knocking, ect. Also, run your hands along the framerails from the door junction forward. A lot of the older fords (at least around here) seem to break from the middle forward. Feel for any irregularities you might not see. welding, fiberglass ect. Finally, remember you are starting a car that has been setting for 15 years. go through the Entire priming procedure. Oil in every cylinder for 24 hours or more, oil pump, drain the old gas out of the carb, replace the fuel filter(trust me) all before starting. Finally, if you do find you want it, Avoid Cops!Right engine, Wrong Wheels

your right drg- come to think about my 66 it had a problem with the rt front rail under the front door. it builds up with crap inside and rusts the bottom of the fame out. i had to cut out about 3 feet of the lower part of the rail and sleeved a piece of steel up into the frame and welded the bottom and plug welded the sides. it worked good and actually looked pretty good. the left side was perfect go figure
