Thanks guys. The color is starting to grow on me. At first I liked it, then I started to not be so sure, but now that stuff is going on I think it will be fine. At this stage, I just want to get this thing on the street. It's been too many years between running rods.

I wondered about the PCV thing too, and am probably just going to run a push in breather. These Cal Custom covers only have the one hole, so that is the only thing I can do, I guess. I don't want to touch the other one to add anything.

Also found out after everything was all painted that there is NO dipstick hole drilled in the block. Being a marine engine, the original tube went into the bottom of the oil pan so you could suck out the old oil. That is pretty ugly, so I am going to tape off and drill a hole into the undrilled boss and add a normal pickup tube. I never thought to look before the engine was done up.

Won't be a big deal, just have to make sure no shavings get in the wrong places. The pan is still not bolted on, so I can isolate that area pretty well.

Don't you just love finding this stuff after the fact ?

Time to head to the shop and get a few more things done. I only have a few hours, one of the previous owners of our marina called me and wants to have dinner tonight. Sounds like he has something going that might be worthwhile talking about. Hope it isn't real soon, I have a car to finish.

You guys have me wondering about the no hole situation, so I called Summit. Their picture in the catalog shows two holes, and I asked the guy if an incorrect valve cover could have gotten mixed in the box. He was non commital, and said to check the part number on my box to see what it says. So when I go to the shop tomorrow, I'll do that. Another strange thing is that there were TWO rubber grommets in the box, but I just assumed they were giving you a choice of sizes. Maybe that isn't it.

Never easy, huh ??? Golf is looking better and better every day.

There should be two different size rubbers one small for the pcv the othere for the breather bigger.

Yep, that is what was in there, and I just figured they gave you the option of either putting in a pcv valve, or a breather, so they gave you both sizes. Maybe one was really meant to go in one side, and the other in the other side. I also have to look, because there is a box of baffles in there, that you are supposed to pop rivit under the valve cover to keep oil from blowing out. If there are two baffles in there, that would mean they really should have given me two valve covers with holes in them.

I'll know tomorrow what is there.

Charlie, just wanted to tell you that you're pretty darned smart for picking up on that. I called Summit, and they had me check the part number on the box. Turns out it should have had a hole in each valve cover, one for the breather, one for the PCV. They issued a warranty return, and I sent them back today via FedEx. They are going to send two new ones (hopefully with two holes )

As a comment on Summit, these were bought last July by Dan for my birthday, but Summit was able to find the order and took them back 8 months after purchase date. I told them I really had never had a chance to look at them until just now, and they understood. Very good customer service on their part, I think.

I didn't get anything else done today on the T, my new air compressor showed up and I had to go pick it up at my old job, they had a forklift, and I didn't. I was tired of running out of air everytime we did sandblasting or something like it, so I bought a much bigger unit from Eaton Compressors. Hopefully this weekend we'll get that installed and get back to doing work on the T.

Don sounds like good dealings you had. We have all seem to buy way before we open and install alot of things in boxes . I have items i purchased for the stang years ago and still unopened.

I was trying to hold up but sometimes the price is so good you have to get it now and save .

    Bob, you're right........what was I thinking???

The first call I made to Summit the guy was not quite as helpful as the final guy. He told me to take a die grinder and remove part of one of the fins, then holesaw a hole into the cover. He said " if you do it very carefully, it will be fine." I DON"T THINK SO. When I told him to pull up the picture on their website and count the holes in their own picture, he changed his tune a little.

Overall however, I have to say Summit is very painless to deal with. I put them right up there with Speedway in that regard. Total Performance is turning out to be a little bit of a disappointment. My Son paid for his '32 grille shell, grille, and Walker radiator about 6 weeks ago, and finally got everything but the shell. When he asked them when it might come, they said "we don't know." I think they keep their inventory very low and rely on their vendors to stock this stuff.

BTW Pops, I remember a while back you mentioned taking the Buick drums to a machine shop for drilling holes to match to the Wilson hubs. If you're going to do that again and you have a drill press you can save yourself a good handful of dough by getting one of these from Wilson. If I remember they're around $8.

Thanks Bob, I learned after the fact that this bushing thing existed. When I came home and told Dan the guy soaked us (me) $ 175 to drill 10 holes and turn the drums, he "mentioned" to me that we could have bought this little item and did it ourselves. I was just trying to move his project along and never in my wildest imagination thought the guy would soak us that bad. Live and learn.

For anyone else who goes that route, I understand this little doodad you pictured screws into the new hub and acts as a guide so you can squarely drill the needed 5 new holes into each Buick drum. All you need is a drill press. I guess you used this when you did yours, Bob ?

Also worth mentioning is that Wilson Welding is about to have available repop Buick finned drums. Added to their line of other great parts, this will be a real boon to guys wanting the traditional look. Original Buick drums are getting very very hard to find, especially with no fins broken off, etc.

Anyway, thanks Bob for the info, in case I or someone else ever does this in the future. (that sound you hear is me kicking my own butt )

Yep. It's actually a guide for a pilot hole, but same idea.

As for his repop Buick drums, he's been promising them for about 4 years, so it might be more difficult a job than he thought, or he's waiting for the price of originals to get high enough to justify what his price would have to be.

Oh, and this should help you........................
