I hope it's ok for my engine to be sitting these last few months. I primed the oil pump early on but since then, it's just sat. I can't wait to crank it up but alas, it's not time yet.....

    Randy,
The song is something about high and low roads and who gets to Loch Lomond (a beautiful lake just N of Glasgow) first.

If you primed the engine way back, it might be an idea to pull the plugs, give each cylinder a squirt of your usual oil, then crank over by hand a couple of times - and yes, you will blow some oil smoke exhaust at first start, but at least it keeps some lubricant on the cylinder walls. You also need to reprime just before start. A flat tappet cam probably needs some zinc based additive or some Shell Diesel Rotella. The EPA has made the oil companies remove almost all zinc and a lot of folks have wondered why their HP cam lobes are now round !!

Ireland's Child aka Dave. Could I ask for another picture of your rear brakes? I'm trying to decide what e-brake setup to run on my Wilwood equipped 9". I really like the "simplicity" of the seperate caliper.
You guys have (had?)a great thread going and I recently started reading it and like you have a Ford in a Ford, 302 in a 34 3 window. Thanks in advance.

    Hi -
Randy and I have been doing our own thing(s) on our respective sides of the country lately as far as this thread but I'm sure that it will revive.

Glad to hear of a SBF in a '34. That IS unusual as most seem to have the Chebbies.

Don't know what more you need as far as brakes. I do need to take a bunch more of the rear part of the car before I install the painted gas tank but am on my way out of the house for the weekend. I can do this the beginning of the week- i.e. Monday or Tuesday. Let me know what you need - but, in case you are looking for Wilwoods with that separate caliper, not sure if it is still available. They went to the Expedition internal expanding shoe style a couple of years ago

By the way, I did "lose" my identity a couple of weeks ago in a forum crash so you will need to find me as IC2 at least until I can get the administrator's attention to return it .

IC2 aka Irish Child 2 aka Dave W. (LOL) Thanks for the reply! I have a 9" rear end with Wilwood brakes like yours but, no e-brake was fitted back in "89", I want to add an e-brake setup and noticed yours and was curious about it. I have seen a few in the catalogs but none like yours, hence the request. If it's still possible, could you post a couple pic's of the setup? I'd like to find one if possible.

Are you happy with the e-brake setup you have or would the newer unit be "better" in some way? Take your time on the pic's, I'm not going anywhere, yet! LOL... Cars been in "construction mode" for 7 years now, not likely to be finished this year! But, I'm trying!

I haven't forgotten that I owe you some pictures - the weather has just been too good to hang in the 'dungeon' shop so I've been painting instead in my temporary booth. Soon

    Randy,
You still around?? I've got color on most everything but the main body - and it is bright!! I plan on painting the body before the end of the week - assuming the weather holds out reasonably well.

    Hey Dave,
Yeah, I'm still here. I'm glad you're finally getting some paint on that car!!! LOL! They'll definitely be able to see you coming down the road!....It looks cool. I think it'll look great with your interior too.

I'm in a little bit of a holding pattern on mine at the moment. It'd be the perfect time to get the thing media blasted and start over on the paint & body work since I have most of the insides out of the car but I just can't justify it financially at the moment......I keep hoping my "ship will come in" or something providing enough windfall to proceed and do it right but alas, it hasn't yet. I plan to get back to work on it in another week or two though. Will post some updates of progress when there is some....

They still haven't given you your name back?? What a drag!

Great to hear from you. Talk soon.

    Randy

My kids are amazed that I've had the patience for this. Growing up, they learned that dad had the patience of a shaken bottle of nitroglycerin. I was usually like those two buzzards in a tree where one says to the other "Patience he!!, I'm gonna go kill sumthin". It come with age.

I'll try to get some pictures in the next few days.

    Hey Dave,

Geez, it's been a while!! I check the site often but just haven't posted in a while. Sorry you still don't have your name back.

I've been doing a little work on my car. I finally got the brakes re-plumbed to fit the new under-floor master cylinder & pedal. I still have drum brakes on the rear for now since that thief from ebay never delivered. I put the 2# residual valve in the front and the 10# in the rear lines for now. I also installed a Wildewood proportioning valve. They seem to work well though I obviously havent tried it on the road yet! LOL

This weekend I'm going to bolt on the fenders and see if I need to make any adjustments since installing the new firewall & floorboards. I'm guessing my front rims are going to be too wide for my ride height (17x8). I got them as a package deal for a great price. I like the 17x8's on the rear but will probably have to swap for 17x7's on the front. They are Boyd Coddington Smoothies. They came out on an 02 Ford Ranger Edge, special Coddington edition. I bought them from a guy who had totaled his truck. I got all four for less than one new one would cost. Maybe I can find someone with four 17x7's who wants to swap 2 of them for 17x8's......LOL! Hey, stranger things have happened!

Anyway, I'm going to shut up for now. Let me know what's up with your car these days. Is it painted yet??

So you 2 guys been hiding down here in the engine forum. Randy nice build you have going on there . Ford in ford is a challenge but seeing them done more and more . Short water pump will give a advantage to using a SBF . I picked up a 94 Mustang serp system to install in a 31 A. I haven't been able to mock a firewall yet to many coals burning right now for me . I do know i can move engine forward about 1 3/4 inches to help .

Now that i see some good Ford info i'll be reading all of it . Spent the last 1 1/2 hours scanning and looking some good stuff.

Ireland i'm familier with yours and still enjoyed the pics showing your build .

Randy if you have a U pull it Yard about grab some brakes off a mid 80's Linc. Mark Lokar has the cables for this style . I picked them up off ebay for a small bearing 9.

    Hey Bobby,
Thanks for the kudos on my car. It's a long, slow process but I'm making a little headway. My dad & I originally built this car in the 80's. It's had the Ford 302, C4 auto, the whole time. In this current rebuild, I'm trying to correct and update some of the decisions we made that were good at the time but no longer work for me.

Thanks for the recommendation about the mid 80's Lincoln rear discs. I'll check that out. Do they still have the 5x4.5 bolt pattern or was that the era of the 5x5? The drum brakes on the rear will be fine for now because I really want to focus on getting the thing running again. Good to have you chiming in on this thread. Please comment anytime!

    Hey Dave,

You're car is looking good. I've been reading about your painting progress on one of your other threads. I'm anxious to see it with the pieces all bolted on.

The UPS man just brought my next wave of projects for my car. I got a complete AC kit from Hotrod air (the Elite Deluxe) which I plan to start fitting the evaporator into place this weekend. I've also ordered all the necessary stuff to shave the door handles. Will be better about posting the progress. I didn't want to post during the time the server was down cause I thought it might be lost.

Anyway, here's a couple of pics with the front fenders temporarily bolted on. As I mentioned on a previous post, front tire clearance is probably going to be an issue after the engine is in. Will have to look for some 7" rims for the front instead of 8". Oh, well....

    Hope your holidays were good!!!

    Randy

Hi Randy - up out of the catacombs of my basement for lunch from color sanding the last fender (well, that's not quite right either). I have lots to go on the body proper. It got cold here(~28 right now) and it just takes too long to heat the garage so the rest of the body proper is yet to be cut and buffed. I do have one spot on the hood that needs some BC/CC touch up and the leading edge of the LF had some solvent pop that needed fixing - but, too cool to paint.

That A/C should be nice - but be prepared for some more 'unexpected' expenditures by the time it's finally installed. I have lots of extra fittings left from doing mine!! A '31 roadster really doesn't have much extra room so it was a challange. My guess is with the narrow front of a '37, you will experience a few new word combinations.

Your car is really starting to look great - many times I wish I still had my '37 club coupe

I see what you mean about tire to fender clearance - looks like if you turned you would hit. I'm using 6" wheels with 3.5 back space which are good for my car.

More later - just glad to see you back here on the "new" forum

    Updated, ~4:05 EST:
I finished the RF fender - and it really turned out very nice. A very little bit of orange peel left, but after sanding/buffing thru a couple of spots on other pieces and having to repaint them, decided that it was "good enough".

Actually Dave, even though my front end appears narrow & pointy, there's quite a bit of room up there. I had AC on it before. It was an interesting concoction of my dad's design that I'll explain some other time but suffice it to say that was the reason for so many big holes in my original firewall. I was also using one of those big honkin' Ford compressors from 60's/70's. It worked okay for cooling the car but didn't have the right radiator/fan combo to keep it from overheating at slow speeds.
This new kit from Hotrod air looks to be pretty straight forward. It came with the compressor bracket which I"m putting on the passenger side this time. My new Walker radiator already has the condenser on it. I also got a billet in-line bulkhead to pass the hoses thru my new firewall. Hopefully, those will be the only holes in my firewall except for where the wiring comes thru on the driver's side.
I got the trinary safety switch on the dryer which is supposed to control the fan. I upgraded the controls to the oval billet style along with round chrome vents which I plan to install in a contoured skirt on the bottom of the dash.
I hope to start fitting some of it on Saturday.

My shaved handle kit came today. I got a kit from Electric-Life with power bear claw latches that have the actuators already installed on them. I also got the prefab mounting plates because I'm going to have to redo that area of the doors anyway. They latches and handles that are in there now came from some 60's GM car.... it was another thing my dad engineered but it didn't quite have the result he was going for and I never have liked the GM handles. Another long story....LOL! They'll soon be gone!

I'm amazed at how bright your paint color has turned out because you had once described it as somewhat bronze. It looks cool though! Looks like you're really doing a nice job with it. I know winter slows down your progress. Winter has been pretty intense here, too......we had several days in the 50's and were freezing our butts off!!! LOL!

    Talk soon.
    Randy
