Thanks for the welcome in the cold months! I am posting on this thread because I want to keep in touch with IC2. Well the weather is good again and yesterday I had to use the fan in the garage! I had a long spell of mind-bending details with a textbook manuscript but two weeks ago I sent in the proof corrections and then I was wondering what to do with my time! Anyway I am still putting off the final wiring on my 'glass '29 but I decided to work on the hood. I am working under a constraint from my wife that the car "has to look like a Model A" so that is why I have been following IC2's all-Ford roadster. I really wanted a bob-fendered '29 on '32 rails but that did not pass the budget approval process (although it would have been cheaper)! Anyway here a few new pictures of a preliminary hood installation. I still have to worry over the hold-down latches and mess with a different center-rod mount. You can see that when I use a correct 1929 hood mount the hood is too high at the cowl. My local restorer friend Dick Ivey just down the street suggested I try a '30-'31 mounting bracket which is a little lower. This is the first gennie part that has not fit my Bebop 'glass body. I think there should be an indent in the top center of the cowl for the hood rod mount. I will have to take it apart again to paint the stainless center rod on the end that shows and hopefully the '30,'31 clip will solve the gap problem. Hey, now I have some "real steel" in the car! Sorry about that vulgar SBC in the third photo! Anyway it looks nice and is getting me back in the garage again. Maybe I will actually finish the car someday?

Just happened by and caught your post, Don. Nice to hear from you
Car still looks good, even with that, that, that Brand X engine
OK - hood hinge and some things to consider. Do you have the rear welting in place yet? The hood will "drape" differently without it actually molding the hood. Of course, that wont fix the problem of being too high in the back. My guess is that Be-Bops made the assumption that 'everyone' would be using a 3 piece hood rather then a four so didn't make a recess allowance for the center hinge bracket. It looks like it's made of sheet metal with a piece of tubing welded to receive the center hinge rod. If so, perhaps you can section and reweld .25 or so lower - or maybe make one of your own design. I have the '32 style hood hinge as it will have less chance of bending at the loops and popping paint chips at the joints and that rear bracket of mine is a cast special that also acts to hold the SS cowl band in the center - and is less then perfect too.
As far as the hood latches, you might utter some strange four letter worded language putting them in place - I pulled mine off, filled the holes before paint and currently am not using the side panels tho probably will eventually, but with Dzus quarter turn fasteners (and maybe draw catches)Dave W

Ya know Don S., I think your more concerned about the car being glass with a SBC than any of us! You've got a good lookin' car there and don't be embarrassed about it! Wish you were closer 'cause I'd help you finish that wiring just to see you smile on that first trip around the block! Keep at it. I know your wanting it as much as I do! LOL..

Thanks for the kind words 34-40. This morning I received a '30-'31 center rod bracket which is much lower. It is a casting nicely powdercoated black from nearby Bratton's Model A parts in Mount Airy MD. It is too cold in the garage this morning to paint it to match the hood so I will wait a day or two to replace the existing casting which is too high. To answer IC2's question these brackets are small castings as reproduced in China! I have dreaded the problem of the hold downs for over a year but I can use a 2"x4" 14 gauge stainless plate under the rear hold downs as load-spreading washers. The only way I can see to prevent losing the hood at speed is to drill all the way through the frame under the front hold downs so I can get a nut on long bolts through the frame. I have drilled all the way through the Brookville frame for other mounting holes both vertical and horizontal so it can be done with the tubing frame. Does anyone out there have a genuine 1929 hood? I wonder if the strange rectangular cutout at the rear is for a Z-shaped bend in the center rod? I will get a picture when I finish this but it may be a week or two. 34-40 I really wish I had some local rodder to help with the wiring but so far I have not found a willing helper.

At the rate that's happening, I may be here in the frozen tundraland of the Great Northeast forever. If you had a few hours, I would relate some about the 6 fruitless trips to the Roanoke area (no, Don, we wont move near Richmond. I have no plans on my wife being our oldest daughters "bestest" friend - and that's good for a few more hours of whining)
Keep at it - I just got a few more things done to my car these past few weeks - they are never done, but can be made drivable and it sure looks like both of you are about thereDave W

IC2, Thanks for the message. There are some rodders close by. One is a neat '32 roadster in Mechanicsville and John York's Kit Car shop is just over the hill. The problem is that I need to spend more time on the car and I am finding that each car is so different that most folks are reluctant to look at a one-off set of wires. Anyway, I am writing here to ask if anyone has a genuine 1929 Ford hood to explain that cutout in the back edge of the hood? I have some other errands this week but I plan to replace the back rod bracket with a '30-'31 bracket and paint the bare part of the center rod. Yes the cowl webbing is on there but the ridge in the Bebops cowl seems pretty far back. I guess this is just the usual messing around with hood alignment other folks have cussed over.

Don I have no problem with glass since sometimes its the best way to go with a clean start and the car you want . I have watched the build for a few years now and you have done a fantastic job . Can't wait myself to see you in the maiden voyage down the street .
Hopefully some year I can get a 33 or 34 myself and it will be glass , a rusted parts missing car is still out of budget .Last edited by bluestang67; 04-26-2011 at 09:34 PM.

Hey Fellas, geez! it's been a while! I'm on the site everyday but haven't posted on our thread for a while. I haven't accomplished too much on my car except I've stripped all the fenders and started reworking a few spots on them. I have a few issues with my truck that I'm dealing with too.
Dave, your car is looking beautiful!! Saw some newer pics of it on another thread.
Mike, do you have your car buffed out yet?? We need some new pics of your progress!
Bobby, what's up with your '37 these days? Is your guy still working on it while you're doing the '31?
Anyway, just checking in to say hey. Will post some pics of my slow progress soon....;-)

Like you I'm here almost every day mostly just checking in. I have been sanding with thousand grit and am about 1/2 way around the car. Sanding this clearcoat is a great way to find all my painting faults! 8-( I'll see about some photos.. hate sharing my mistakes but... I'm going to take the week of the 19th off from work and push to finish the exterior as much as possible.
I was thinking that "we" hadn't chatted in awhile but, I haven't been "chatty" as work .... get's in the way... Thanks for taking the initiative!

'mornin' folks. Randy and Mike, glad to see you folks up and around!!
I'm here every day but don't post quite as much as I used to, but it's still fun. I've had my car out a couple of times, but not as much as I had hoped. Too many other things, mostly house related, going on. I did get some wind wing brackets so now have to make up some templates for the glass. The template supplied makes them way too big.
Randy - slow progress is way better then none
And as far as "faults" - I found a couple that I hadn't seen before when I did good polish, but neither is a big deal. Mike, if you have a run or so, a single edge razor blade (careful ! ) will work as a scraper. Just knock off the sharp corners. There are tiny body files especially made for them too, but IMO, don't work any better then a $2 for ten pack of blades.
Gotta get back to supervising the new roof going on above me ($$$$$)Dave W
