    New HP verses Old

Need to probe the "THE MINDS OF KNOWLEDGE"
My buddy's and i argue about the engines of old verse's the engines of new. I say that the new engines are better engineered then the 60's engines and therefore are a better choice for rodding an older car especially with the wider use of superchargers and turbo's. Also the power to weight ratio's are much better today with the composite materials available today. I would like to agree with him as i prefer the old style rods. Who's right?

P.S. Found this car on E-bay, 71 SS Monte Carlo 454 TWIN TURBO!!!, (hope i got the size right this time)

    new hp verses old

You got some good points, definately a good debate question. My 327 is almost 40 years when i rebuilt it and i hammer it and have'nt broken it yet.I like the old motors,I think its like the old question what came first the chicken or the egg!

Some new engines are much better than the older ones. Take for example the latest incarnation of the ubiqutous small block chevy. Stronger bottom end, better cooling, better heads, better (powdermetal) rods, less parasitic drag and a host of other features that make it superior to it's predecessors.

But I'm betting that there are a few newer engines that may not be as (physically) strong as their forebears. Anyone want to give some examples?

It depends on what you want, do you want to build a car on Physics, or computers? Do you want a strong block or a weaker one? Do you want flexibility and lots o parts?

I perfer old motors, my 5.0 in my galaxie is bored 40 over its from 68 the metal can take it, on the down side I had to bore it 40 over cause of decades of abuse.

I did buy new Style parts that werent around in 68 like aluminium heads, forged rods pistons ect. Roller bearing every thing ect, ect, ect.
I say build old with new tech. the best of both worlds

OK, A lot of th new tech is based on the old tech. Ever hear the saying "everything old is new again"? Think, f40GT, throwback mustang, caddilac v16(SWEET!), GTO, and to be fair to the mopar crowd, the grandaddy of most great mopar racing engines, the HEMI. The rocket v8 was in the aurora, the 350 is in the GTO, and the Hemi is going to become a V10. This is a combining of new and old tech. It doesnt matter if its new or old tech, its does-it-work-tech.

Oh, and on the side, a few engines that are not as strong as their replacements? 2.5L chrysler engine replacing the 2.5AMC in the wrangler. The quad 4(olds WORST engine ever!), the wankel rotary engine in the newer RX7s, the 4.6 in the crown vics, the 1985-1989 305 (seen a lot dead, anyone care to confirm this?), the HORRIBLE 2.6L mitsubishi 4cylinder. All of the knocking dodge engines during the early 90s and late 80s, the EFI powered slant 6 in the final diplomats(can anyone figure these things out?) Feel free to add to the list, this is just a start.

Funny. My wifes Mazda has a mitsu 12 valve 2.6 and it's got over 300k on it without a rebuild. Still runs just fine.

    Thumbs up old /new

I think . that every vehicle manufactor in the past/present/furture has and will built some kind of lemon of some kind along the way... there are a lot of new inovations that are great but there is a lot of old technology that was great too...One that comes to mind is how advanced the gasket manufactors have come let alone the sealants...The new technology here has made it great for the older engines by stopping leaks..especially oil....Simplicity verses new high tec......I like the way my EFI engines run but I like the way my old inlines run too......Like 200MPH duct tape.!!....How did we ever live without it.!!...
The cylinders have to be inline.!!!

    old vs new

I still like the old motors, any one can put a crate motor in thier ride, its like everybody puts a 350 in the rod they build,I love to see rods built with hemis , 409s etc, to take a old motor and build it up and use that than just buying a crate motor and putting it in is more original and is more to talk about then , what you got in it? 350, no shit how original I can buy one of those.
