5.0 short water pump find
Been looking online to find a cheap version of the Ford short water pump . Found out the 94-95 Mustang and 88-92 cougar t-bird have a short water pump serpentine system on the 5.0 . This combo will knock off 1 3/4 inch in length of the 5.0 engine matching the stock sbc 350 at 27 inches. Most i found online where well over the $250 range for a pump and 2 pulleys . I picked this up for $75 , 30 minutes from my house off a craigs list add i put in last night looking for one . .
The pics make pump look alot shorter but it is 1 3/4 shorter easily and may be just a bit more . The pulley sets aren't to bad dont mind ordering them
Well the Ford theme got bent a little tonight also at the local U Pull It i found a 82 Chevy column with tilt and cruise option . Even one better it had the keys hanging in it . I see a little mod in shortening it but it"s going to work . But the search will go on for a ford column .
IM STILL LEARNING .Last edited by bluestang67; 07-10-2007 at 05:47 PM.

Denny this looks more like a casting number . But Ford would be easy to call and see what a 94 - 95 Mustang timing cover # is . Great thing is guy i talked with said there is no real call for these years and they should be plentifull. He had quite a few stangs and a built 93 Cobra

I worked at a ford dealer for about 1 1/2 years unless they changed them it looks funny to me .

Would be nice if someone had a Ford parts book . One day i might get a parts interchange one . That would be a handy novel for sure .

Found the stock crank and water pump pulley's . The harmonic balancer on the engine , luckily is the right one for app at allmost 4 inches long and the stock 28 oz weight . I forget the exact dimension (3.950) or so. This factory app serpentine may be the cats meow to Ford's in a Ford soon.
Also found all the accessory brackets with a used alternator and a a/c compressor. The only sad thing wont be able to play with this system till i get back from W. VA. . It will all be coming in when i'm gone. Once i get back we'll all see how one will fit under the hood of a Model A with a 5.0 HO in it.
One thing i know i will need is a P/S delete type pulley. This I will have to use all the fabrication skills of you Pro.s . I have only seen the a/c and power steering delete offered aftermarket and i want to keep a/c for this Chicago weather. Here is a pic of factory short water pump and pulley's now at the beginning .Last edited by bluestang67; 06-28-2007 at 07:08 PM.

All the brackets came in today for serpentine system. The componets are a little more compact . I will have to mod alternator to keep hood . The a/c will have to be moved to top of the bracket . I'll cut off where the power steering mounted to clean it up . You can see though how much room is opened up with the 94 mustang water pump . I can put in a electric fan move it forward 2 inches easy maybe more. If i go with a fan blade and build a shroud it comes forward even more . These figures are guessments but close..
If i wanted to run just a hood top this could be a easier fix . The sides have to be there for the look i want .
So a little mods and i should be running a serp system for a very small fraction of what they want for a custom one.
This idea came thru all the fabbers here . Watching and reading the posts i figured it will be a fab from me , not a store bought bolt on . Well it is bought thru a salvage yard but mods will be me
5.0 with this belt system could up set the sbc's home .Last edited by bluestang67; 07-10-2007 at 05:58 PM.

A bit of a hood bulge should make everything work fine! Some good shopping, I'd say! Good score, Bobby!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Dave good idea . I could make hood solid at this portion ? Then have fins finish up behind it . It only needs a inch or so to clear .

Yup, just cut the louvers out where they hit, then install the bulge. A shot bag works good to form the bulge, or a large chunk of wood ground down to the inside shape of the bulge, then hammer form some 20ga. over it, cut it on the flat, weld it in....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Thanks Dave im starting to see a pic of it . This may give it a little aircraft look also . A little bit of difference can make someone look harder to figure out what they see too . . Doing one side i dont have to be concerned about symmetry either . A lope sided hood wont look good .
another question is how do you smooth metal after you bang knots in it with out a english wheel .Last edited by bluestang67; 07-10-2007 at 09:28 PM.

Today i played with serpentine a bit. Alt. mount will fit fine under hood with some slight grind on bracket. The a/c will be a bit more involved . The journey to be able to drive in any weather Chicago can give , heat and a/c is a must .
The left side brkt which holds original power steering and a/c will have to be cut a lot . First pic showing brkt as a whole and second shows what is left . I first cut off the section i need that holds the a/c compressor which is located all the way at the bottom .
Then taking out a section at the top and roughly holding compressor up till i had a idea where to cut. I think i read where a compressor can't be reangled due to design and oil issues. So up top i cut a bit to stand a/c mount section in its original mount angle . A little more cutting but close is getting there . Fabbing one in steel probably is alot faster but the aluminum look i do like . Some more trimming and i think the idea will be belted really soon .
Issue with redoing the belt guide will be later when i have a/c in postion and welded up.

Took bracket to work had it tacked for fit . Over half a inch clearence to the hood so as some say close enough . One thing id hoped is the belt would just clear but no chance . I will have to get a smaller pulley or cut it off and reposition it about a inch higher so belt don't interfer with itself . Now to go to work on bracket and make it look like it was made this way . Some fill in panels and gussets and it will look great . Well beauty is in the eyes of the beholder any way.
Thank you Roger. .
