Salt/Dry Lakes
We all know that the foundation of our sport, was when young blokes wanted to make their ole jalopy's go faster and beat their mates, and before long, this attention was turned to the salt and dry lakes where the thirst for speed was quenched, (at least for a little while).
I havn't been to the salt, and over here, there really is only one place to go Lake Gardiner, but I'd love to hear any stories or experiences you lot may have.

Outback,
I love the photograph that you posted. If you've got a high
resolution image file, I'd like you to e-mail it to me so I can make
a poster of that rascal!
I haven't made it out west to the salt lakes yet, but I think I see
a road trip coming somewhere in the future I believe that
most of the action on the lake beds these days is pretty high
tech - serious record breaking stuff.... and like Richard said,
with all of the restrictions / safety issues it's probably not the
same "experience" as it used to be.

Outback, I just had to write and say that you picture is awsome. I have a lot of pictures in digital and 35mm and I don't think I have one with that great of an effect. The cars make it.

Thanks guys, I wish I could take the credit for that one, it was sent to me from a friend, I dunno where he got it, probably on the WWW, (Not Wide White Walls)
I'm hoping to get out and geta taste of the salt one day, hopefully
with a car!
Richard, I kinda know what you mean about not being a spectator sport, cause I used to crew for a "litre sprintcar" (they run 4cyl's on Methanol, and have wings) team
and when I went and we didn't have a car running, it kinda didn't have the same appeal!
I've read a bit about the early days on the salt, and it just facinates me, like the pierson's with their coupe, doing engine changes in the carpark of the motel, over night to run a different class the next day, wow!
A thought to remember Rat Rods were once shiney cars on the showroom floor, but now have been saved from being Yard Art!
