How do you like your paint???

I have custom painted for other people for 35 years, and do all styles. Recently the hobby has been changing rapidly, and often. I feel it is due to TV programs, new social groups, many young enthusiasts entering the hobby, and older members exiting the hobby.

Today I find that I, personally, prefer to do graphics that are more unique, one-of-a-kind jobs...rather than the predictable copies of current and past trends.

I guess I should define what I mean by "custom paint":

My understanding, after 40 years in the business is, that it is usually a job that includes some sort of art work, like striping, murals, flames, and so on.

Painting a car a different color than what came on it is usually simply referred to as a color change, unless it is a special aftermarket product like candies, metalflake, special pearl colors, color-shifting paint, and so on. At that point it is sometimes referred to as a "custom color."

Generally, we are talking about paint + graphics of some sort.

I find that some of my customers feel the way I do about the graphics...

...some are willing to add personal touches to popular themes....

...a few are willing to break away from the crowd, and do something unusual...

...and some like different cars, and adjust the color & graphics for the project.

The question in my mind is "How large is each group?"

Please vote in this poll, and tell us the reason you prefer that choice.

I liked the George Cerny type as used on some very fast cars in the early 70s

Being an old drag fan, I also love the cerny paint work, (below) and the other styles of the era! I'm dying to do a '70s style psychedelic job! I have seen signs of it coming back, but I think it will be 5-10 years before we see much of it.

The paint was the hardest decision of the whole build!

I still like solid colors, so I guess that makes me a traditionalist. Only exception would be flames or scallops.

Those would all be #1 choices, in our poll.

As i am just getting into trying to build something that looks different i still vote for traditional with some personal touches, but i would say it depends on the vehicle as much as anything.
I just wonder what happened to GOVERNMENT of the people by the people for the people?

I'm all for the comeback of the psychedelic paint schemes!!!! Brings back memories of my mis-spent youth!!!! Maybe one of those paint schemes on my old T-Bird?????

I voted on the last one, I think for me it very much depends on the vehicle. I once saw a 37' chevy in cotton candy pink with purple flames I loved. on our truck it will be two tone, on my 65 stang I had as a teenager I wanted to go with a metallic green. I have seen color change jobs I liked, I have seen ghost flames that almost disappear from certain angles that were just mesmerizing. Scallops I almost never like.

I really go in for the 50-70's paint jobs. I like gold leaf, great lettering work, I also like signage (like on the doors) pinups and well done murals. I think overall I am pretty open to a lot of different things, it just depends on the vehicle. some don't look good with anything, some you have lots of options on. I just saw a show winning skylark that is a purple color, car is gorgeous, paint is ugly in my opinion. (but then again I'm not a judge).

I once saw a bel air that was white, but had some sort of pearl in it and was layered maybe (not a painter so I don't know) and it looks like you could stick your hand in the side and swirl it it was so deep and wet looking.

the one two tone scheme I like on some cars but seldom see anymore is candy apple red with white, I knew somebody with a 58' corvette (58 or 59) that was painted that way, slick as greased owl poo.

My question is, what does a good, not Sac. Autorama good, but normal person good, two tone paint job cost on a 51 ford truck.
