How do you like your paint???
I have custom painted for other people for 35 years, and do all styles. Recently the hobby has been changing rapidly, and often. I feel it is due to TV programs, new social groups, many young enthusiasts entering the hobby, and older members exiting the hobby.
Today I find that I, personally, prefer to do graphics that are more unique, one-of-a-kind jobs...rather than the predictable copies of current and past trends.
I guess I should define what I mean by "custom paint":
My understanding, after 40 years in the business is, that it is usually a job that includes some sort of art work, like striping, murals, flames, and so on.
Painting a car a different color than what came on it is usually simply referred to as a color change, unless it is a special aftermarket product like candies, metalflake, special pearl colors, color-shifting paint, and so on. At that point it is sometimes referred to as a "custom color."
Generally, we are talking about paint + graphics of some sort.
I find that some of my customers feel the way I do about the graphics...
...some are willing to add personal touches to popular themes....
...a few are willing to break away from the crowd, and do something unusual...
...and some like different cars, and adjust the color & graphics for the project.
The question in my mind is "How large is each group?"
Please vote in this poll, and tell us the reason you prefer that choice.Last edited by HOTRODPAINT; 10-18-2007 at 09:31 PM.

I liked the George Cerny type as used on some very fast cars in the early 70s

The paint was the hardest decision of the whole build!

I still like solid colors, so I guess that makes me a traditionalist. Only exception would be flames or scallops.

Being an old drag fan, I also love the cerny paint work, (below) and the other styles of the era! I'm dying to do a '70s style psychedelic job! I have seen signs of it coming back, but I think it will be 5-10 years before we see much of it.Last edited by HOTRODPAINT; 10-18-2007 at 09:10 PM.

To me, it really depends on the car. The type of car, the age of the car, the accessories on the car all kind of dictate what would work best. Some colors go better on big cars than they do on small cars and vice versa. Graphics can make or break a car, depending again on the style of graphic and they type of car.
I wouldn't expect to see a wild colored swoopy graphic on the sides of a 32 Ford with rolled and pleated interior, a checker board white and black painted firewall, a detailed flathead and red painted steelies with baby moons and a trim ring. Some things are just better with plain old pinstriping and no flashy graphics. Other cars, the flashy stuff looks far better than pinstriping.
As to flames and scallops, again both can look great on selected cars, but not on the same car. I prefer scallops on 50's and 60's (and some 40's), and flames on 20's thru 60's vehicles. Again the style of the flames and the scallops also can make a big difference.
Speaking of flames, here are two shots of flames from the same car as seen last weekend at the NSRA nats in Tampa. Appears to be a labor intensive paint job, looks nice, but not my style.Last edited by mopar34; 10-19-2007 at 10:22 AM.

"LIFE IS NOT A JOURNEY TO THE GRAVE WITH THE INTENTION OF ARRIVING SAFELY IN A PRETTY AND WELL PRESERVED BODY,
BUT RATHER TO SKID IN BROADSIDE,
THOROUGHLY USED UP, TOTALLY WORN OUT, AND LOUDLY PROCLAIMING:
WOW.... WHAT A RIDE !!!"
When I was about six years old, a race car on a trailer went past our house. I thought it was the coolest thing I had EVER seen! And I haven’t been the same since. That was over fifty years ago. ...
How did you get hooked on cars?
