You won't find much if any negativity on this forum. Everyone on here is smart enough to realize that we all build our cars our own way, and what suits me might not suit you. We might offer an opinion or two, but when it comes down to it, you are the guy laying out the money and the only one that counts.

Me and the kid went 305 sprint car racing this summer,he won the track championship. car with driver & ten gallons of alky weighed in at 1742. That motor would hike the front wheels on a good tacky track.
60 over 305 block, stock crank, 6.2 eagle rods, custom flat top ross pistons, total seal rings,550 lift schnieder flat tappet cam, block decked , stock 305 heads #602 ? no port or polish (rules) 184 intakes (unshrouds em) all light weight Fierra valves, Fierra light weight lifters, crane springs & roller rockers, heads milled, stock oil pump, cheap Ebay jap copy nascar style intake,750 holley homebuilt alky carb, vertex magneto. complete motor including machine work, minus fuel & ignition system cost me about $4.500 . I don't have any dyno numbers but I would almost bet ya that motor was class of the field ,a buddy had built a very similar motor with 30 over bore and 5.8 rods for his 305 sprinter he also did the 4 - 7 firing order swap, that one has dyno sheets @ 364 horses ( his word I haven't seen the sheets) but since done by a pro engine shop, cost a considerable amount more than mine. My kid can pull him on a straight away drag race ( I contribute it to the 6.2 rods ??)
We ran 27 shows this season, turned it 7200 rpm and I just finished getting it ready for winter storage, backed the rockers off and did a leak down wich showed perfect, pulled the pan and looked at a couple rod and main bearings and they looked very good although I will put new bearings in this spring. All in all I've been very impressed with these 305's..... Butttt still there ain't no subsitute for cubic inches...

i love the 305 in my 78 firebird. .060 over with headers, .cam = .454 - 290 dur. and otherwise stock right down to the 2bbl. Gets 18 MPG @ 80 MPH, and stomps the hell out of ricer burning punk kids. OH yah, I love shifting into first @ 50 MPH and grabbing a car length, thanks to my 2.41:1 rear end!.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

go with the Comp Cams Xtreme energy XE262H Its 218/224 dur at .050 and 462/469 lift and 110 lobe sep . I think this is also the cam the guy used in that you tube 305 . Do a little porting to your 305 heads . This is the biggest cam you should run in your 305 . It will give you max HP and not kill your torque . And you can go down to a 2800 stall and run a 355 gear . COOL
