Thread: My panel truck build.

I had a bbq yesterday, and my buddy ryan was looking at the truck, he claims he used to see the panel sitting outside a surf shop in st augustine since he was like 10, he`s my age, so according to him that would have been in the 80`s. Well i got a little curious and decided to google it, but the only thing that pops up is a surf shop in melbourne which is where i got the truck from. I called the shop this morning ,and the guy says he got the truck about ten years ago and put the logo on it and parked it out front, but about 8 years ago an elderly driver lost controll of her car and t-boned it in front of the shop. He says the insurance company totaled the truck, and he has not seen it since. i told him mine only had a small spot on the passenger side, and he says it must have been repaired, but theres no way mine has been fixed, there`s no evidence to support that, so now im even more curious as to the origins of my truck.

Yeah its gonna be real fun! I did mess with the vw a little the other day. cant get the fuel pump working, so i guess it needs a new one. With the gas prices i need to get it running, would save a hell of alot of dollars!

I finally got out to the shop tonight and got some work done, its been way to long. Hopefully i will get my steam back and get alot knocked out. I removed all the front suspension parts and lots of wire wheel action the last couple of hours. For some reason ive been dreading doing this, so thats part of the reason i have not done much, but its all done now! Not much worth posting pics of, so ill get some up when i get the frame clean, welded and sprayed. Im gonna spend forever blasting the a-arms and other components. Ill post more later.

It`s a possibilty Mr Robinson, really depends on how much time i can devote to it. I did get a pretty good start tonight though. It really kills me how much rust is on this thing, i knew it was bad when i looked at it, but now that i really have to deal with it im starting to wonder what i was thinking!
If i can keep focus i think i will be ok, ive really had the desire to hit the bars lately, so im hyping myself up to get going on this, in the long run it will be a better decision, the club scene does nothing but keep me broke and gets me in fights, so beating on metal is much more rewarding. Well here`s some pics of tonights efforts.

I thought about cutting out that whole door support out but i decided it would suffice with adding a brace to it. I tacked the outer skin on, now i have to deal with the inner mess, but thats ok i have a 12 pack and a saturday night.
Im gonna take alot of pics of this door, but will not post the others. I thought it might be nice for guys that have never done this to get an idea of what needs to happen. In all honesty this is my first door rebuild too so bear with me. With my limited knowledge and tools this will be a good refference for other beginers.

I basicly bent the edges on my brake to make the edge flange then i threw it in the shrinker to create the radius in the panel. It had a radius in the bottom and the sides, i put it in the door opening to check the curves to make sure they fit.
I have learned every thing i know from this site, the fine folks here have shown me more than i ever could have learned by myself! I am a little embarrased to show my work on this site because of the mass of perfection that is displayed here!

I did a little tinkering today, had to cut more rust out but i think i can make the new panels fairly easily. I started the hinge side, then im gonna get to the bottom side. The corners are still boggling me a little, i dont think ill be able to do them in one piece, but we`ll see what i can come up with.
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
