That's what I am doing with a Bare 350 block I have . I pick up a 307 for free . Pulled the 3.25 L/J Crank . Lot of work just for the crankAnd bought a set of re-built 327 L/J rods with the SPS bolts installed and 11.1 pistons on the rods $70 bucks Local Craigs list . But I do think for what he want's that car to do the 23 or + 030/060 more ? CIs he will need with only a 410 Max rear end ! Best to at Least keep a 3.48 stroke crank 350 build .

see gears have never been my issue i dont like driving on the street because all that happens is you get fu**ed with constantly by idiots. so i stay home. i dont need any speedin tickets or charges from beating up any idiotsof course when winter is gone that first nice day is always a treat to go driving and make some noise. after this funk of being worthless and broke goes by
ill try and drag that 63 nova home and start making it a gasser the bbc thing i guess is impossible to have a highway drivin bbc run 12's or 11's even though an ls6 chevelle could do it? so ill stick to my guns and fire up another "baby rat"

A 327+30 over 331 with a good set of heads 500 + Lift cam . With a 3800 to 4200 RPM stall speed and a 456 rear end will do the high 12s thing . But the high way it will not do . But there is the 700R way to make it more streetable . I never had any Luck with them OD transmission's . And the co$t for a built one . NO WAY ! Not for me TH400s we used after we got tired of always changing broken TH350s .

take a 400 and put a 327 crank you get a 348but back to his original thread it depends on what you want to do? high winder? or high torque? you can get 12.5's with either one of those its up to now

Nova 350
Natedogg , Go for something streetable. I myself have 73 Nova. The guys and gals helped me with my combination. I went for simple. 350 , .030 over with forged flat tops pistons. Comp xe268 cam with roller tip rockers , Dart 64cc heads. Automatic trans built with 373 gear. Edelbrock 7101 intake with 750 Holley vaccum secondary. Soon as weather breaks get rest car together try it out.

On a car that heavy, it's going to take torque to get that mass moving.... Whatever you build, the best return for the dollar is going to be to build the engine with lots of torque!!!! Actually, the best return on the dollar would be to take about 500 pounds of fat off of it!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Dear Eric excuuuuuse the hell outta me for trying to save the guy a few bucks. The guy originally was talking about a street car in which case he wouldn't need 500HP because he won't have a place to apply it except very rarely. Regarding not reading properly, where does it mention anything but a street machine in his original post? Nowhere. NOW he says he wants a 12.5 second 1/4 mile car. 2 differents things.
Just saying "I want 500HP for the street" is typical of people who've never driven one with that much power in urban scenarios on a daily basis. A real street cruiser needs to be responsive but brute HP and 800CFM double pumpers doesn't get it. It's overkill. There is no substitute for cubic inches

Nova 350
Dave , If I took 500 pounds off my car I could not drive it.My car with me in it is 3600 lbs. That why built mine for torque like you stated.

Check out this months issue of Car Craft; a junkyard Gen III 5.3 truck engine with nothing but a cam change made over 400hp. At 295hp stock, that's over 100hp with just a cam. These are awesome engines and they come right from the factory with aluminum heads and 6 bolt main caps. I bought one with 60,000 miles out of a 2002 Suburban for $550.00. There's one in this months Hot Rod (in a Ford Fairmont of all things)that has a used LS6 cam, a 70mm turbo, and no other mods making 600hp and dipping into the low 10 second range. I don't think there's a better performance bargain out there anywhere.
You're welcome Mike, glad it worked out for you. Roger, it's taken a few years but my inventory of excess parts has shrunk a fair bit from 1 1/2 garage stalls to about an eight by eight space. ...
