How to offend car guys with one word

Looking to have some fun? Go to the HAMB, post pictures of your project, and call it a rat rod. By the reaction I got, you'd think I'd burned the American flag, spit on their mother and raped their sister! Dont remember the last time I had so much fun! Nice guys in the end, just got them stirred up pretty good.

There's more than a few HAMBrs that come over here.

I don't see them creating problems....

I'm sure most of them were just having fun. A little controversy can be a good thing, keeps life interesting.

You must have just hit the right people. I'm a HAMB member and I could care less what kind of vehicle you were building as long as it was an honest build. That is as long as you are pretending it to be something it ain't, like putting a flattie into a 87 S-10 and calling it a hotrod.

You build it, you enjoy it, and I'll watch and read about your joy (and frustrations) during your build. I know of at least 10 members here who are also members on HAMB as well as several other boards. Gear head diversity is a good thing.

BTW-I'm a HAMB member too! I don't post much because of the above reason. However, there is a lot of useful info on their site.

I noticed they have a lot of terms that use, that are not in line with the mainstream history of the hobby.

Street rod, I believe is a bad word, because it is shiney, and not a '50s inspired build.

Not sure about hot rod...but I think they use it in place of vintage hot rod, which is their favorite name.

I guess rat rod is too negative of a name to give to a rusty hot rod, with 50 year old technology, and bad construction. :-)~

Stay there a while, and you will find out that a guy who can build a really nice car is a goldchainer.

Most of the threads on the HAMB that I have looked at or participated in have been decent with a lot of good info or assistance being offered. They do a lot of different things other than just information sharing. Some of the members arrange cruises for members in specific areas and they have charity auctions and events for members in need. For the most part a pretty good group of people.

But I have also witnessed some threads where a few responders have gotten pretty hostile. While others make jokes in an attempt to diffuse the situation. Some of the stuff that goes on would not be acceptable on other forums and would be shut down quickly.

    Can't say it's ever dull.

They are not fond of the word "billet" or anything with billet on it. A lot of their menbers have shiny paint cars with shiny chrome and stainless, just no billet.

Recently they had an event in Ocala Fl, they called Billetproof. A few members from here attended and enjoyed themselves. But I heard from other friends that attended that they didn't really keep out all of the cars with billet as quite a few were seen on the grounds. Guess money talks louder.

I would have like to have gone and the 57 would have been acceptable even with the shiny paint; but if I had taken the 34 I would have had to paint the wheels flat black and removed a number of parts that were disgustingly billet. Just not worth it.

It's an old argument that'll probably never be settled. Some guys like their cars really nice, some like to build old heaps; I think there's enough room for all of us. I figure if you want to spend your time and $$ building it and enjoy the finished product, you're not hurting anyone else or making anyone else's car look bad. Variety makes the sport fun, we just dont need to slam each other over our differences. There's enough of that in the world now without us adding to it.

A bit off topic - but I once asked a guy if his 66 Chevy II was a true SS.

He went off on some tyrade about yanking the motor, putting the straight six back in it, replacing the buckets with the bench seat, putting the old column shift back in so it would be original - WTF - now I just look at the cowl tag!!!
