    Automatic overdrive for a 460

    Was there a non computer controlled AOD trans made to fit a 460?,when the 390 in my 65 country squire gets tired I would like to use a 460 and use a overdrive trans. Does anyone know if one was made. Jeff

    Junkyardjeff;
    I belive that some of the ford picks with the m400 and m351's had the A.O.D. in them,look in the early 80's pick up trucks.the 351 and 400 Modified are big block bolt patern's so what ever they had behind them will bolt to the 460.I don't know if these were computer controlled, hope this helps.

    Jeff, I think Vara is right, check early to mid 80's stuff, not sure exactly what year they put boxes on the AOD's, but I think it was '86 or '87. Let me know, gotta find one for my '72 pickup one of these days, it's still a project in the "round to it" file.

    I am doubting there was an o/d for 351-400m came only up to 1980 f series trucks c6 or t18 4speed. They used a c6 or 4 speed since day one the latter 1990's ones had a 5 speed od stick and whats called an e4od or 4t100 which is electronic and I am unsure of the availability of a stand alone kit. I will check into and post if I find something...I found this just now...edit http://www.drivetrain.com/new_overdr...d4spdauto.html

    I talked to Ford today about availability on an AOD transmission he wasn't even sure if they had one for the 351/400 modified. He did say however, that they had built one without the computer controls for a small block Ford. It's funny when you can't even get a straight answer from Ford whether they made something or not. He siad he couldn't find it but, thought they had something for it. HUH wonder what something means? If they have an AOD that is not computer controlled they are not telling me.I have the feeling the want me to keep the tranny I have in my Bronco nowwhich is an 89' 351 Windsor small block with an AOD behind it that is computer controlled. Sorry I couldn't help more...but heck, Ford can't even help us.

    I have two non computer controlled AODs for the smallblocks but I heard that one was made for only a year or so for the 460. If ford dont know who will?,I dont want to spend the big bucks for the add on units. I heard that the diesel motors have the same bolt pattern as the 460s and the AODs were used behind them too but before I go to the junkyards searching I would like to know what I will be looking for.     Junkyardjeff;
    I've rebuilt a couple of 400m's and a lot of 460's as an ambulance mechanic back in the early 80's that was just before they went to diesel engines, so I'm not sure if they had put the AOD transmissions behind the diesel or not. If you find out what year it is let me know, I'd like to call this butthead back at Ford and tell him where for or tell him whats what. All the 400's that I built were manuals and I believe the 460's had the C6's behind them. I'm working on a 351 Cleaveland now that had a FMX transmission, good tranny but heavy, and you can't hardly find a shift kit for it. Now leave me a message if you find out which AOD tranny wasn't computer controled, I'm sure there's a few of us that would like to know. Thanks!

    I checked out the website for the trans adapters and there is a adapter to put a AOD behind the FE motors,now I wont have to get rid of the 390 in my 65 country squire to get a overdrive. Thanks for the info. Jeff

    Lightbulb Ford 460 AOD Trans

    Contact Baumann Engineering @ www.baumannengineering.com, they have loads of info on AOD trans stuff for fords. What you need is a E4OD trans. It's basically a C-6 with OD. It's the only OD trans that will hold up to the torque of the 460, it's computer controlled but they sell a stand alone computer that will make it work! Check them out. I'm planning to put one in my truck here in the near future. Hope this helps! Jim

    I am not a big believer in cross swapin ,but it seems everyone is usin a 700r4 behind dodge ,chevy, ford, buick and the works!Seems to be alot of performance parts for the 700r4 and since the 460le came out in the vettes and camaros the 700r4 seems more available now and a little cheaper.but its still cheby!
    Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

    Thumbs up OD Trans for 460's and other Fords

    Here are some links to help you guy's wanting to install an OD trans behind your Fords. www.high-impact.net. www.performanceautomatic.com. www.transmissionadapters.com. www.baumannengineering.com. All these company's offer High Performance stuff for all the Ford OD's, advise on how to make them strong, info on there weak points and lot's of good general info. In reply to shawnlee28 sugesstion on swapping in a Chevy 700-R4 I contacted CoanRacing.com and they indeed make an adaptor to mate the chevy trans to the ford but is not practical to do into a stock ford truck or car, the only guy's doing this swap are the early Hot Rod Guy's. With a new modified trans,convertor,computor (if you need one) and all the misc. stuff your looking at about $4,000.00 min. You could cut costs searching the bone yards and rebuilding the trans your self doing the necessary mods to make them reliable but hey! it's just money!
