F1 Steering Box
I have a steering box from a '49 F1 to use in our Essex project with Model A frame front (cowl forward). It looks like it needs to stick out beyond the frame about an inch or so to have room for the motor/bell housing. I want to use the drag link set-up and having it about an inch above the frame rail seems to give a level attitude for it, from pitman arm to steering arm on '49 front end. Anybody have pictures of their installation that I could get ideas from? I want to keep it back toward the cowl as much as I can so the mount points of the radius rod come close to the pitman arm point, as suggested. HELP. Perley

Thank you Steve for that pic. I have used the front half of a Model A frame which is not quite as wide as the frame you show. I tried that first, but box mount flange is too wide. So I was going to mount the box externally, above the frame and projecting out beyond the frame rail too, to give room behind the box for clearance to the motor et al. But today I cut the bottom hole/tab off the box and now it fits inside the framerail. Trouble with this is it makes the pitman arm hang down so low that I have an upward angle to the steering arm on the driver's side wheel for the drag link. I would have preferred it to run more level with the ground. Oh Well. Now I guess I have to modify the boxing plates inside the frame rail on that side. Thanks. Perley
