    '31 Model A

Well I just came across a '31 Model A that I just had to buy, the guys even gonna put it in my garage for me. It's in awesome shape, hardley any rot at all. So now I'm gonna put it on my frame instead of my '27 T. They're both Tudor sedans so I think it should fit. I would like to see what you guys have done as far as chop and channel as well as any other mod's. The more info the better, I don't want to screw this one up it's too good.

    Thanks,
    Sean

I have shopped the chop for years. I think 3" is perfect. Mine is 3'. The 4"' is too much and 2" is not enough. My 2 cents. tc

A 3" chop is a good choice, but there are a lot of issues to look at. Like how tall are you, what is a comfortable sitting position for you in the car, How does that work with your planned chop?? When you are driving the car, you want to be as comfortable as possible or you're not going to want to dirve it, especially any long distances. Once you figured out those things, then you will know just how much you want to lower the lid by.

My 34 sedan has a 4" chop, and I am 6'1". To comfortably see the road out of my windshield, which is just 8" tall now, I have to lay the back of my seat down on at least a 45 degree angle. You can get used to driving that way, but it ain't comfortable and sooner or later your back and legs will let you know it.

So do yourself a huge favor, test everything before the chop, because afterwards it will be too late.

    Good luck with your project.

I'm just over 4' tall, 5'9" to be exact. I was thinking a 4" chop would look good but you're right, I want it drivable.
I was looking at the latches from Speedway wondering if they're any good or should I use my bearclaws. That would mean figuring out an inside handle as well. I like the idea of using the ones from Speedway just for ease of installation.

    Thanks,
    Sean

First you say you are 4' tall, that's 48 inches, then you say you are 5'9" that;s 69 inches, A difference of 21 inches. I think I am confused. Must be the late hour.

If your car has a floor and if you know what seats you plan to use, put them in the car (temporarily) get in, sit down and see how every thing looks and feels. Then go with your gut instinct. After all only you can decide what you will be happy with.

Not sure what door latches you are referring to.

This is a 4" chop on a '30. I'm 6'-0", and I could rest my elbow on the roof.

    4" chop on 29

Here is my 29 Ford with a 4" chop. I have a 29 Ford five window coupe that I am going to leave the roof stock height. Something different I guess.

There is a very good article on giving a Model A a 4" chop in the July 2008 issue of Rod and Custom. The chop was performed by Jimmy Shine and there is a wealth of info and lots of pictures. The Model A that was chopped was 5 window coupe and not a sedan, but many of the same principles still apply. You might want to take a look at the article it had alot of nice tips in it.
