hot rod subaru
We went to an all Subaru road challenge today at the Subars/Toyota factory I work for. Nothing but Subarus allowed to race and it is run on the factory parking lot. These guys and gals come from all over the country to run in this parking lot in Indiana, Subaru has a very devoted crowd of people that love these cars. I saw plates from 5 states away. This is a whole different breed of hot rod, but all in all the end result is the same. Squeezing all you can out of your car and hanging it all out. Some have in car and on car video systems to tape thier runs from multiple angles. I was surprised at the amount of female drivers there were. Some of these people are serious when they come and pull 4 slicks from the trunk and back seat and swap out tires to run the coarse. There was probably 150 cars that showed up to race against the clock. I drive alot of these cars at work and in stock form turbo model they have 265 to 305 HP (depending what model) and weigh about 3400 to 3800 lbs, all wheel drive independant susspension,. We make a spec B model that has an all bilstien susspension with a turbo, they really come alive after about 3000 rpm too red line. Any ways here are a few pics from today.Last edited by mooneye777; 08-23-2008 at 01:47 PM.

The first Subaru I remember seeing had a 3 cylinder two stroke engine. It must have been some time in the 70's, but the car was probably older than that. As I remember, it could barely get out of it's own way, let alone race anything bigger than a roller skate. They've come a long way!

Ya they have come a long way, my dad had one in late 70's. The spare tire was bolted on top of the engine. so you saw tire after opening the hood. They are now a pretty serios ride. Most of the cars pictured are probably all stock with stickers, even the hood scoops are stock, except some have slicks installed. I just did my very first short video on youtube, here is a link to see if it works.

Just one more and I will get off the subject. Here are some world rally chanpionship videos. These are the absolute worlds best drivers in my opinion, so under rated its not even funny. They deserve way more credit then they get. They drive with the skills of a surgeon holding a scalpel. Check the in car footage, 125 mph on a road 4 feet wider then the car sliding and jumping, within inches of people standing there. (watch last video) hitting the mark most every time. These guys are awsome drivers, and ironicly subaru has one of the finest teams. please watch and see if you agree.

Friend of mine that bought my VW Vanagon a couple years back took it home and put a Subaru engine in it... Not sure which it was, but he sez it will sure run circles around the stock VW stuff..... Guess somebody makes a kit to swap them into the Vanagons..... Anyhow, neat stuff, thanks Moon! Anything that goes fast and turns left and right is kewl!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Been there
Those things are almost unbeatable in autocross... it was pretty discouraging to get beat by them when competing in my Corvette ... Then I took a ride in one and I understood...hard to beat someone that has twice the driven wheels on a tight course...They even sound pretty good for 4 cylinders...I also remember those first Subarus in 69...they had a 30 something horse 2 stroke engine in them, not exactly an STI

I wanted to buy the WRX impreza when they first came out, but could not afford one. Those cars are bad a$$ for a stock import. thanks for the pics.

We've had three Subies over the years. Two wagons and one GT. Basic units with the 2.5 liter H4 are slow but have potential with a little beefing up in the engine compartmetn. The 3.0 Liter H6 is much livelier. My current daily driver is a 2001 Outback Wagon with 120,000 miles on it. I intend on seeing it hit at least 200,000 which will be in about another 3 years.
Quick and agile at speed, but getting upto speed feels like it moves just a little faster than a slug. Same basic engine as the WRX STi, but with out the go fast goodies.Bob
