    I'm gonna venture a guess on #2. How about it meaning LL, for left lane?

    I suppose if lane choice had to be communicated back then, it would tell the starting line crew what he had chosen.

    I could be wrong on this one but the early Chrondek lights that had a stage light and a green were called LL trees (for leavers lose). They didnt count down, the starter triggered the green with a switch box.

    ... okay makes sense ... so the device was the new tree with stage lights.
