67 Camaro SS may have missed a deal
Has anybody had this happen before? Yesterday while taking the grandson home after him spending the night I spotted a 67 Camaro for sale in a yard. My wife wasn’t to impressed but on the way home she did stop. Another guy pulled up as I was walking to the house, the guy said is there a number? I said no and kept walking, I spotted a couple of guys and asked who’s Camaro. Then the young gut started asking all kinds of questions is it a numbers matching, any filler? Now I was getting pissed off and said I wanted to look at the car and I was there first but this guy was jumping the guy. The young Notre Damn guy didn’t like that but I thought I had been doing this a lot longer then him.
I wanted to see the engine and again this guy starts asking about the carb, and he see’s it has the double hump heads. The jerk was leaving and said he would let the guy know.
The owner thought he was with me at first, of all the years I have looked at cars, if someone were there before me I would wait until they left or decided they didn’t want the car. My wife being in the car I know she does not like to wait while I talk, and talk so I said I’d get back with him.
Now in the car my wife ask if I was going to get the car or not? I said I didn’t want to commit right then without talking to her. My wife said I will go home and you can go back. I said if it’s ok then I’ll go back and I give him a deposit.
I told the guy I could give him a deposit and it would take me a couple of weeks to get some money, earlier he said it would be ok that he could hold the car until I got some money together. Now he said his friend had been trying to get the car for a couple of months, and he would take my deal if the other guy didn’t want it. He said he would call me this morning either way. I think it was the Notre Dame guy, even though he said it was someone else. The car needs to be finished, he said it was a California car, true SS code on the firewall, and door jam say’s it is I know tags can be changed. The floors look great, as there is no carpet. He did put new quarters on plus the rear panel that holds the taillights. The engine came from a 72 Chevelle it’s been rebuilt painted looks really nice, it was a car with factory air, it has disc brakes, Muncie 4 speed. He wanted $6900 he came down to $6700 so now I have too wait. It needs paint complete new interior but the glass, and body is pretty nice. If the Notre Dame guy doesn’t it get what do you think?
I really do not need another project but these Camaro’s are getting scarce. I was going to take some pictures but I felt like I’m going to lose it after not giving the deposit when I was there. I can live without but!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah.......too many times to tell about.....
but, a couple years ago we were walking by a '36 Ford 3 window coupe at the GG deal. The guy was putting a for sale sign on the seat (not sure why he thought that was a good idea but as you'll see.......) as we approached. It was a decent looking car only needing a small change in stance and some different wheels and tires to be just right. I didn't have enough in my fun account at the time to swing the deal, so I mentally wrestled with myself for a couple minutes figuring where I'd take the extra few thousand from to swing it. Turned around, walked back to the owner who was talking to another guy............yep...........SOLD. One of the fastest transactions I've ever seen. I did give him my number in case the other guy flaked, but it was too good a deal for that to happen.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

It's driving me crazy waiting for the phone to ring.
I once told a guy where to put his 55 Chevy 2dr. ht. really nice, new paint red/white, frame was painted black, new tires, New American gray 5 spoke wheels $3,200 after him changing his mind. This was in 1986 He said when was ready to sell I would be the first that he would call. A short time later I was having a car fixed at a body shop and that guy bought the car. He said a dr. offered him $6,000 right then but he turned it down.

Yep, happens to all of us. I've been the one who wins sometimes too, I've bought a car and then some other guy would come pulling up a minute later asking about the car for sale. The seller would say "this guy here just bought it." I sorta feel sorry for the guy who lost out, but happy I was a faster driver.

Don, I called about a 57 Chevy one time for $9,500 he said a guy was coming in the morning but who ever comes up with the cash first gets the car.
I didn't sleep at all that night and we were on the road at 4:30 a. m. We left so fast we realized later we had a bag of garbage on the trunk. I forgot to put it in the container on the way out of the driveway.
I called the owner around 6:00 a.m. got him out of bed we put enough money for a deposit so he would feel safe holding the car, before the other people got there. He said the other people would have taken the car also.
Sometimes I think it's like a druggie getting a fix!!!!!!!

I just got the phone call. It was the other person, Father son project. The guy came with cash and gave him the full price $6,900. I said I didn't feel so bad since the Notre Dame (RUDE) guy didn't get it.
My wife just said gone in 60 seconds, she knows how to cheer me up!!!!

Your right Don, my wife said why couldn’t you just be happy with the 68 Convertible? So I guess that means I get $6,700 or $6,900 towards working on it. I can now see a crate motor, new interior, new top.
Thanks Don, I'm going to pass this onto the wife.
But first I have to have a bit of crying time!!

When I watch Ebay and stuff like that I'm seeing old car prices(especially projects) that are pretty juicy lately compared to what they were doing a couple years back. Kinda like houses. Buyers don't have the bucks right now, like me..There sure are some tempting deals out there though..

Richard it's happened to all of us. Mine was a 59 porsche roadster type d convertible. 6500.00 I didn't have the cash, and had never applied for a loan for a car, so I told the guy if someone gets the cash first to you. sell it. An hour before my loan went through, he sold it for cash to a guy. I was bummed, esp now it must be worth 35k today. But it wasn't meant to be, and I would have been a poor owner, compared to what it deserved!(I was 21 at the time). I would never had the cash or garage to keep it protected from the elements, or spruce it up right. So it's the one that got away.
Those SS's are really nice, so I do know how you feel! But a 68 convertible is also nice( My brothers both had 68 Firebirds in highschool. One had a convertible with a 400 under the hood, the other had a hardtop with a 350.
Both sold for next to nothing back then.
Just think of the truck you want to start, the convertible...crate engines with obscene hp!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Its funny what makes people tick!....I found a 34 Ford 3 window in a storage wharehouse back in the late 70's. It was an old dragster, but in great shape! The manager of the storage place said his buddy owned the car but would not sell it.....he had been trying to get it for YEARS!....He gives me the guys address, which is just up the street, I knock on the door....He says, "ya know, I could use the cash".......When I go back to get the 34 the Manager is sooooo pissed, he wouldnt talk to me..... ...I only paid $1300 for it and even back then it was a great price for a steel 3 window...
Heres a shot 2 months later, after chopping the top.....
Here she is finished in the Miami World of Wheels......(My first paint job too!)

This guy is still working, and he has a nice 70 GTO Judge in his garage. He was getting ready to put the 67 on ebay but a friend, of a friend and his dad got it, the kid is 14 so the car will go to a good cause. It will be a shame when these car guys have to part with their cars because of hard times.

I knew a guy that took a second mortgage out to get a really bad 57 Chevy Convertible at least I thought at the time. Today you could not buy a running 57 Chevy convertible for $12,000 but that’s what he paid about 10 years ago.
T42
What a nice looking car, I really like the 34 more then the other years, they look like the car from the California Kid movie. I paid $1,500 in 1968 for a nice primered 31 Ford 5 window. After trading I ended up with a 39 Ford coupe but it needs everything redone, it will more then likely end up as one of those good deals when I’m gone because I sure will not sell it.
I think when we go out of our confines we should have blinders on, at least for me.

Richard times are getting hard and some good projects are going to be coming out of storage . Sounds like the Camaro was a good deal though . I bought the 67 S code site unseen when the guy told me the price .

Bobby, I keep telling myself that I have enough things to work on and I don’t have enough room in the garage for what I have. But I know I just missed it by less then an hour. Some company is making the 67-68 Camaro shell with doors, and trunk lid for $12,495. It was a good deal but I keep telling myself it’s going to a Father and Son to work on so that should be ok. When my wife gets me out of the house she will have to blind fold me until we get to our destination, if I see and old car I have to stop.
