out of work, out of luck
Well ladies and gentlemen, when I got laid off five months ago, I wasn't too worried about it. My job skills are varied, my credentials are good, my refrences are many.
but here we are. I cannot believe there are others more qualified than I.. but obviously there are because I have been turned down by many good jobs.
anyway, I have given up on the corprate job hunt, and am pursuing a second military career. Funny that.. if I had stayed in, I could retire this year. Oh well.
Anyway.. I am getting rid of a lot of garbage.. and giving up on a lot of projects in the wings. TO WIT.. my 36 chevrolet master sedan just rolled off. boy, it was a JOB winching it up on the trailer with a comalong.
yesterday, I hauled a truck load ( full size truck load ) of junk to the dump. I went through the storage sheds, and if it has been in there for a year and not touched, it went! Then I took a car load of stuff and donated it. Earlier this year, I took two truck loads of metal scrap to dump. And I have at least one more to go. Just getting everything ship shape before I ship out.
HUUAAAHHH!!!.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

I suspect that you are the best qualified in your field. I further suspect that you have not found work because of a general hiring freeze in industry. It's not that you're not worth hiring, it's that nobody is worth hiring.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

There are times I've had to get through tough times by doing things I did not prefer to do. I always sat down and listed all of my skills, what business people I know who might be willing to help, skills I can market to the public myself, things I can sell for quick cash, and how I can trim living expenses. These are all, of course, temporary. That makes it easier to take a step backward just to "get through it".
I've always bounced back, and ended up doing what I want. You'll survive too. Just don't let pride get in the way of your goals.

It sounds like you have made some good choices and have some options to get you through this downturn in the economy. I hate listening to the news any more because it is one story after another about how bad things are..........and the problem is, they are bad. I know so many hardworking, honest, qualified people who can't find work that it breaks my heart. Up until August of last year I was among the ranks of the unemployed, and I used to have people calling me at my job offering me a new job. That all went away for two years, and I feel so fortunate to have my present position.
Keep your head up, things have got to get better. Lots of your fellow Americans are in the same boat right now.

Keep your head up and it's a good time to be in the military. I'm really thankful for my job and know how lucky I am. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. I'm very concerned about the future but still have hope. Good luck and God Bless.

I too lost my job a few weeks ago due to the economy. I didn't think I'd be looking for a job at 61 years of age.. Oh well, being originally from Pennsylvania, I'm used to being laid off or on strike from the steel mills and foundries years ago.
Moved to Rochester, NY in 1973 and got laid off from Kodak in 1977. Quit Kodak to start my own business in 1999. Worked in Canada for 2 years as a consulting manager and was laid off in 2001 after 911. Worked another job as a technical writer for 6 months and got laid off due to lack of work.
At least this job lasted 5 years. Few months closer to retirement I guess.
Good luck to ya Firebird!!!!

I'm sorry to hear of your situation; there is a lot of that going around. In fact, we're living with one aspect of it right now; our youngest son lost his trucking contract sveral months ago when things started to get rough, lost his truck, and to keep him from having to live on the street after his wife took off, he, and his two kids are with us, for a spell. He is having zero luck finding work - any kind of work. Fortunately, you have the military thing to fall back on, and I hope it works for you.

Sorry to hear of your predicament. I don't know where your specialty lies, but check out Federal government jobs. They are always hiring, as long as you are a US citizen. You might have to relocate, but that's not always a bad thing.Bob
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail....but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying..."Damn....that was fun!
