    Loud Pipes?

Here in central texas there are a fair number of early rods running open zoomie headers on the street with no problems from law enforcement. I guess they see old farts like myself that have invested a lot of time and money, so they let us slide. I tapped the baffles out of my 4" side pipes, removed the packing, and put them in backwards with the internal louvers facing the exit. Not really that loud, just enough to set off car alarms in the parking lot. I would like to know your experiences in other parts of the country.
    Thanks,

My car is mucho loud with no problems so far. I think it has a lot to do with how you present yourself and what you are doing besides the noise to gain attention.

No problems yet....guess it all depends on what kind of mood the cop is in.

I've had no problems with mine. I've even had cops pull me over to see what I'm running and they always say sounds nice.

I have baffles in mine that drop it a few decibels, but it is still not as quiet as if it had mufflers. On the other hand, my Son Don is running his Limefires wide open, and has driven it all over with no problems............and that baby is LOUD! (like dragstrip, pulling to the line loud). I hate to pull into a car show behind him because the crowd parts as he drives through, and my car sounds like a Yugo comparatively. They keep telling me to take my baffles out, but I like the tone better than when I had it wide open.

If I ever get stopped I think I'll just use the biker's adage......"Loud pipes save lives!"

I prefer a nice sounding set of pipes with good mufflers. So much of Hot Rodding is first impression to the public, just never saw a good reason to offend those who don't like the noise with an obnoxious sounding set of pipes. Sure don't need a cop magnet for a car anyway... Just never have got into the open exhaust on the street. Another thought, Hot Rodding is on a precarious list of "could be an endangerd species" in many areas and I sure don't want to give the Hot Rod haters more ammunition to shoot us down with then they already have.

I just came from the ironindianriders.com forum, and had to double check to see that I wasn't still there!

yeah, loud pipes do occasionally save the day, but at the END of the day, I want to be able to hear the wife.

Or maybe hearing loss wouldn't be so bad after all, come to think of it...

anyway.. I always wear ear plugs on the Indian, and driving the 64 C10 which literally is louder inside than out. ( strange that )

Never had any REALY LOUD cars though. But my bike is fairly loud.. but not EXTREMELY loud.

    Pops is right.
Running open limefires right now and they sound great. Of course they are louder than an exhaust system with mufflers, but not offensive (unless you punch it) I rarely get on my T too hard (honest) but when I do I do it smart on a open stretch of highway where the police arent sitting there waiting and I certainly do not punch it next to a car with open windows, etc, etc, out of respect for someones hearing. I can still hear my girlfriend talking and the oldies on the radio. I have not been pulled over yet and our area has its share of police. The car actually has a great mellow tone at cruise speed and a great nasty idle when you fire her up. I guess I just understand that it could be offensive and respect that with my driving. Truthfully police give me the thumbs up or wave at me when they go by. I think it is the presentation of the car that makes the difference too. AND of course with all the loud rock and soul music I hear all night with the band I am sure my headers will not be the cause of my hearing loss. Different strokes for different folks! Don Jr.

The one thing I REALLY enjoy is pulling up next to one of those idiots with loud booming bass on their stereo and watch them put up their windows.

I have had some very "direct suggestions" from the local law enforcement in regard to the notes from the Harley. I have Hooker straight pipes and the V Twins are well, loud. I ended up putting the baffles in the Harley and it certainly tamed it down, but it will still set off a car alarm in a closed parking garage - go figure!

FlowMaster 40's on SBC sound real nice and I've never had an eyebrow raised from the police..
