I tried out a Saab like that once. It had a shifter like a big choke button, you pushed, pulled, and twisted it to shift gears. Weird, but simple.
Like a 2-stroke bike, it ran smooth as you accelerated, but fired intermittently when holding speed. I passed on buying it, wish now I'd brought it home, it was only $50!
