    Well, isn't this special???

I haven't driven my 23 for about the last 3 months because I have been working on the 27 project, but I spent yesterday cleaning it up and thought I might start driving it a little. The last time I used it I noticed a slight miss in the engine and figured it was fouled plugs as it runs rich with the 2 x 2 Rochester setup...........I never got around to installing a pressure regulator and those 2GC's only like about 3-4 lbs.

Tonight after work I decided to do a compression test and see what was what. 7 of the cylinders were right at about 190 but number 7 had zero. I pulled that valve cover and watched the rockers move normally, and then loosened both the intake and exhaust just a tad to see if it made any difference. It didn't. For a while now I have been noticing my dipstick has been coming up about a half inch out of the tube when I ran the car, so evidently compression is going into the pan. My best guess is a hole in that piston or a cracked ring or two. With zero compression my bet is on a hole.

I'm really not upset, after all it isn't the car I depend on to get to work every day, so I will throw the cover on it and when I get the 27 done I'll tear into it to see whats happened. I've been wanting to bump up the cam anyway and I now have this bug for stroker engines, so a 383 kit would be cool with some more aluminum heads. Chevy stuff is so cheap it wouldn't pay to just do another 355 rebuild.

Oh well, I got 2 years out of it and those were absolutely trouble free, so who am I to complain. I'd tear it down now out of curiosity but I really don't want it laying around in 1,000 pieces until I can pull the engine and rebuild it. Such is life.

I might borrow a scope from work and take a peek into that cylinder though.

I'd go with the hole guess Don. Last time I had a cracked ring it built so much pressure it forced oil out everyplace. I mean everyplace.

    That sux.

I'm sure you got something cooking ........ what about the flatty?

The flathead is sitting all coated with oil. I have a plan for it and the rest of the goodies I got from you Paul. I think when the time comes I am going to ship it off to somebody like H and H for the initial machining and then assemble it myself. I already spoke to my regular machinist and he said he does everything but flatheads, says it takes someone who knows how to properly do them. Dan has the one from his 49 too and is saving it for the Tudor stored in our loft..............that is if he ever gets his rpu done.

I'm not really too bummed about the dead cylinder in the T. Lot's of things could be worse.

Well Don ...... great attitude about the damage. Ya just can't keep a good hot rodder down.

Any solid plans yet on the TRR? My wife wants to be at the beach cause of the little one & his older brother.

    See you there.

Depends on how close you want to be to Belaire Plaza Paul. That's where most of the action is at night. You could stay at the La Playa or any of the ones on that end of A1A, or there are a bunch of motels all along that strip. If you shop on line you can score some pretty good deals, we generally paid in the $ 160 to $200 per night range...........sometimes less. Being that there are just us 3 guys we weren't real fussy about the accomodations, but with a lady involved you might want to stay at one of the nicer places. You know how we guys are, if it has a bed and a shower it's fine with us.

Dan and I weren't planning on taking cars anyway as we have more fun shopping the swap meet than anything else, but Don may be taking his T. Jury is still out on that one though. Can't wait to see you and the rest of our friends there. Can you believe it is almost October already!

Yep, I know every time I've taken a trip with a lady I don't get to stay in the same places we guys feel are adequate. And they say two can live as cheaply as one.

See you in Daytona Paul, and I PROMISE to bring your Billetproof shirt. (It's probably a collectors item by now )
