YEAH RIGHT.... Tui beer advertisement we have over here... But I know exactly what you are saying... I had decided that my bucket would be paint House of Color Tangerine and after seeing Steve's photos of his '32 I am still keen on that colour but with heavy metalflake, but today looking at pictures of custom cars in the USA, I have seen 2 to 3 colours that screamed out at me to put those doubts back into my thick skull.Last edited by Whiplash23T; 06-18-2010 at 12:55 AM. Well, the picture below may seem like it is the same one I posted a few days ago, but it isn't. This is the repainted version of my 27 body. Dan and I worked yesterday and today, block sanding the paint to remove some of the imperfections, and tonight we shot it with two coats more of the same SEM Hot Rod Black. We also got the grille shell prepped and painted, as well as the two headlight buckets. One thing that helped was that Dan bought me a new, better spray gun for Fathers Day, and it did work a lot better than the old one.
It still isn't perfect ( a booth would be so nice) but it is good enough for me. All that is left is to repaint the grille insert from the red it was to gloss black, and then I am done painting. Maybe next week after the paint cures totally I can slip the body on for a looksee.
Still have to bend up the roll bar and take it to the chromer. Then the body can be put on for the final time. Looks like I might make October.

Don,
I'm so jealous, I am so far away from primer let alone paint that I could just spit. Looking good.

Jack, thanks. I know exactly what you mean. Getting past this painting phase is such a huge hurdle when building a car. You can't do a darned thing more until you get the bodywork done and the paint sprayed. This part has been holding me back for months. It's time consuming, dirty, expensive, and frustrating work. If it hadn't been for Dan jumping in and doing the lions share of the work my car would still be unprimed and unpainted. You get to the stage where you don't really care if you have to bug bomb it, you just want some finish on it.
The bad part is, it's time to do it all over again because his body is finally ready to start priming and painting. Probably will start that next weekend.

Looking good Don,
How about some upto date photos of Dan's RPU before you all start splashing that paint on please???
I know how you feel Jack, fustrating at times when you see your friends cars come to together and you seem so far behind. Keep smiling and just plug away at it and before you know it, it's finished, and then you feel is if there is a large void to be filled as you look for something else to build.I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

Thanks Whiplash. As far as Dans car, he has been doing a bunch of small but necessary little tasks before we can prime it. He had to build some handles for the secondary door locks he installed, and he also decided the windshield needed to lay back a tad more, so he modified the posts. The top frame had to be modified to fit better also.
Tonight he sat in it to check clearances, and I offered to push it around the block for him on the body cart so he could get the feel of it actually moving for a change. He turned down the offer, but I think he was seriously considering it for a minute.
Here are some shots we took tonight. Dan looks happy that this build might be coming to an end sometime soon.

We also got some stuff bolted onto my 27 body. Dan put in my 47 Chevy tail lights, and I got the windshield temporarily bolted on. I am going to take the windshield to the glass shop tomorrow and see if they can cut the glass straight across, instead of the curve it now has. The guy who cut it 20 years ago made it uneven so I'd like to get that taken care of. If they can't cut mine I'll have them put in new glass. I'd like to save the old glass as I'd hate to lose the Lucky Lady decal.......she's ridden with me for a long time. LOL
Here are some shots from tonight after getting some stuff bolted on. I like the satin paint even better today. The next to last picture I had Dan take through his windshield. I wanted him to see the view he will be seeing when we line up to race each other................my tail lights!

Yes That is me waving my arm in the air again, got some questions please.
1st.,I agree your windscreen look better cut straight across and I hope you can savage the transfers.
2nd., I am very interest in the roof frame Dan is using, is it his own design and will it fold down like the original one? If the answers are yes would you be kind enough the take some detailed photos of how the hinges work as I have to build my own fold down top for my bucket. I intend to use a front bow made of wood as his is but I'm not to sure how to build the side arms and how to hinge them. I want to use a solid glass rear window in the rear section that will zip open and fold when the roof is folded down so that the roof will clear my roll bar and also as my safety belts are bolt to that bar,the zip will have work in with the belts. I know I like making things awkward but I am passed having a roof that one has to decide early in the morning what the weather is going to do before I head off on a rod run, remove and leave at home or play it safe and end up cursing having a roof on a beautiful day.I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

I'm awestruck at Dan's Rod building skills and I with everybody else here are longing to see his pickup finished then maybe he can jump onto a plane and come downunder and help on my car.I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

The top frame is a kit he bought, and I'll have to ask him whose it is. I thought it came from Speedway, but not sure. I think it is from some company in Australia. I'll find out tomorrow and let you know.
Yes, it is made to fold down, but his is going to be welded solid. He revamped it quite a bit because he didn't like the way the side support bar came down into the window opening. We spent one night cutting it up and reshaping it to get it the way it is now. He never plans on putting it down, so this will work for him. He also is going to have a roll up rear window for ventilation, like you mentioned.
As it comes the frame kit isn't all that bad, but when you use it with a chopped windshield, like his, that side bar gets in the way somewhat and sticks down below the top material.

Excuse my stupid artwork, but the original side bar was about in this position.

Don,
Thanks for the updates and the pics of Dans car. He has a Cat that ate the canary look in the 1st pic and a Big SEG in the second pic. Nice work both.

I actually like the curve. But I love Lady Luck. Gotta keep her! It's funny, my Harley came with a Mr. Lucky key chain. I always ride with it! Just superstitious I guess.
Seems like you and the boys are getting lots done quick. Your thread always helps motivate me to get out the sander and get to work!
P.S way off track here, but from one pet lover to another, Pretzel caught a cat in the backyard last night! My wife has a chewed up arm, and Pretzel's got a torn ear and cuts around his eye and mouth. He got hold of the cat and was too scared to let it free after it tore him up. The poor cat was terrified, but o.k., when we got pretzel to let go of it. It's one of those moments you really feel your heart thumping. My wife came in trembling I looked at her arm and blood was dripping down from everywhere! I hope both the dogs and the cat learned a lesson. This cat sits on our porch outside the front windows tormenting the dogs all day. I guess last night he decided to venture into the back yard while the dogs were out going to the bathroom! Ugh!)" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.
And a Happy Birthday Wish for Mr. Spears. Hope you can have a great one. :)
